But,\u00a0as with most of life&#8217;s stings, the disappointment comes with a learning opportunity.\u00a0An exam wrapper (or assignment or project wrapper) can help students understand what happened\u00a0and what they can do to improve their learning.<\/p>\n<p>A wrapper is a tool, a series of questions on a form that students fill out after they get their exam grade. In short, they&#8217;re asked to identify\u00a0and reflect upon their own actions and behaviors when studying. This process\u00a0helps to develop\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metacognition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metacognition<\/a><\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meta_learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meta learning<\/a><\/em>; students increase their understanding of themselves\u00a0as learners and see the correlation between their successes or their less-than-ideal grades to their personal actions and behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>Some faculty follow up with a class discussion or they request that students visit them individually during office hours to talk about what they wrote. Sometimes the wrappers are returned to students prior to the next exam, in time for them to reflect again and take steps to adjust their actions.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0following steps are from <a href=\"https:\/\/cit.duke.edu\/blog\/2016\/09\/exam-wrappers-to-help-students-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Duke University&#8217;s Center for Instructional Technology<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 20px\">\n<p><em>Guidelines for using exam wrappers<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Explain to the students why you are using exam wrappers.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Give the students time to fill out the exam wrapper in class. Spending class time encourages the students to take exam wrappers seriously.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Collect the exam wrappers.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Review the exam wrappers for ideas for how you can help students succeed.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Return the exam wrappers to your students before the next exam.
