Phenology Walk
I went on my phenology walk on a bright and windy Tuesday afternoon on April 22nd, 2025, at around 3:30 in the afternoon.
As we are still pretty early in the year for buds to be breaking and leaves to be growing, there were not many changes to the five trees. Throughout all the trees, I only saw buds breaking on the red maple and red oak. I did not see a single leaf or fruit on any of the trees.
I did not realize that there is citizen science data for almost everything about phenology. I am kinda amazed that there is so much data about what animals are emerging and how they can predict when they emerge to a tee. Maps show when specific types of trees and flowers will bloom in certain areas. If I had a house, I would look up when a certain invasive critter would emerge and prepare my yard for that. Or, I would learn when my flowers in front of my house would bloom to know when to add new mulch.
