{"id":916,"date":"2012-09-27T16:44:46","date_gmt":"2012-09-27T20:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/~career\/blog\/?p=916"},"modified":"2012-09-27T16:44:46","modified_gmt":"2012-09-27T20:44:46","slug":"to-go-or-not-to-go-considering-graduate-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/career-center\/to-go-or-not-to-go-considering-graduate-school\/","title":{"rendered":"To Go or Not to Go: Considering Graduate School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/~career\/images\/Blogimages\/Decisions.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset Crossroads\" width=\"235\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are lots of reasons why people choose to go to graduate schools and pursue advanced degrees.\u00a0 Deciding to go is a complex decision that involves the outlook for increased earnings and deepened learning in a field of study.\u00a0 Although there are a plethora of reasons why to go, we\u2019ll explore a few good reasons why <em>not<\/em> to go to graduate school.<\/p>\n<p>An article called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/liz-ryan\/the-five-worst-reasons-to_b_1660844.html\">\u201cThe Five Worst Reasons to Go to Grad School\u201d<\/a> provides some useful tips for when to avoid graduate school.\u00a0 Here are the five reasons, paraphrased: <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>1.\u00a0 To Fill a Personal Void<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You are more than your degrees. \u00a0Graduate school is great for people who find their zest from studying particular topics in-depth but doesn\u2019t tend to be an effective patch for the holes in one\u2019s life. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>2.\u00a0 For bragging rights<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Graduate school is a hefty undertaking, and it will take time and money.\u00a0 There are cheaper ways to obtain a positive reputation. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>3.\u00a0 Buying your way into a network<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You will join a new network if you go to graduate school, but you are likely already a part of many networks (including the UVM community) and these will grow throughout your career, with or without graduate school. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>4.\u00a0 It\u2019s the only way to get a job<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some jobs do require advanced degrees and some prefer them.\u00a0 But there are lots of career opportunities for people with Bachelor\u2019s degrees.\u00a0 Employers want dedicated and skilled workers, and those skills can be developed in a plethora of ways. <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>5. <\/em><em>It\u2019s what to do when you\u2019re lacking direction<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Graduate school is not the place to discover your life\u2019s path or career journey.\u00a0 The strongest graduate school candidate\u2019s know what they want to study and why.\u00a0 Not with meticulous detailed measure, necessarily, but enough to have a vision for where the process might lead.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the decision to go to graduate school should be based on much reflection and consideration and it is yours to make.\u00a0 To learn more about the ins and outs of considering and applying to graduate school, visit the Career Services <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/~career\/?Page=applygrad.html&amp;SM=pursuemenu.html\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>~Ashley Michelle<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are lots of reasons why people choose to go to graduate schools and pursue advanced degrees.\u00a0 Deciding to go is a complex decision that involves the outlook for increased earnings and deepened learning in a field of study.\u00a0 Although there are a plethora of reasons why to go, we\u2019ll explore a few good reasons &hellip;
