{"id":1313,"date":"2014-04-09T16:45:32","date_gmt":"2014-04-09T20:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/~career\/blog\/?p=1313"},"modified":"2014-04-09T16:45:32","modified_gmt":"2014-04-09T20:45:32","slug":"dont-forget-to-say-thanks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/career-center\/dont-forget-to-say-thanks\/","title":{"rendered":"Don&#039;t Forget to Say Thanks!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/~career\/images\/Blogimages\/thank-you-note.jpg\" alt=\"Hand writing thank you with a pen\" width=\"294\" height=\"218\" \/>So you passed the interview stage.\u00a0 Now what??<\/p>\n<p>Send a thank you message within a few days of the interview.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to being courteous, a thank you demonstrates enthusiasm, reiterates interest in a position, and provides another shot at selling yourself for the job. \u00a0Plus it demonstrates strong communication skills!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s<em> <\/em>always<em> <\/em>beneficial to add more than just \u201cthank you.\u201d\u00a0 But <em>what<\/em> should be included?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Start with the pleasantries.<\/strong> Thank the employer for taking time to meet with you.\u00a0 Tell them you enjoyed your conversation.\u00a0 Discuss interest or excitement about this position and the company.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get specific.<\/strong> Talk about a key moment or expand on an answer.\u00a0 Discuss personal skills and experiences and how they would be assets for the company.\u00a0 If there was an important detail left out of the interview, highlight it\u2014briefly. \u00a0If part of the interview didn\u2019t go as well as planned, address that here (but don\u2019t make excuses).\u00a0 Make a connection to information the employer gave during the interview.\u00a0 Say something like, \u201cWhen you told me about <em>x<\/em>, I thought about <em>y<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sign off.<\/strong> Let the employer know how you\u2019ll follow up, and thank them again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether to email or mail the thank you depends on the preference of the employer or on the type of interview (phone vs. in person).\u00a0 The time frame for notification could also dictate how it should be sent. (You don\u2019t want the employer to receive your the note\u2014by mail\u2014the day <em>after<\/em> they\u2019ve made their decision, right?)<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few more tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the interview was with      more than one person, send each one a customized note.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the thank you      concise.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t need to be as      long as a cover letter.<\/li>\n<li>As always, remember to      proofread\u2026 Don\u2019t send a note that reads \u201cthanks you.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the thank you has been sent, wait.\u00a0 If you haven\u2019t heard from the employer by the time they specified, follow up by phone or email and express your continued interest.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find a lot of different advice on how to say thank you.\u00a0 The most important thing is that you do it \u2013 one way or another.<\/p>\n<p><em>~Abbey, Career Peer Mentor<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So you passed the interview stage.\u00a0 Now what??
