It can be difficult to navigate this decision, but the Vermont Attorney\nGeneral\u2019s Office hopes to provide some help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with the Department of Disabilities, Aging and\nIndependent Living (DAIL), we\u2019ve released a new consumer guide called \u201c<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ago.vermont.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/consumer-guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Comparing Nursing Homes, Assisted\nLiving Residences, and Residential Care Homes in Vermont<\/a><\/strong>.\u201d The guide lays out the primary differences\nbetween nursing homes, assisted living residences, and residential care homes\nin Vermont, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>how facility-types are defined\nand who is eligible to be a resident;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>restrictions on the level of\ncare the facility can provide;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>facility staffing requirements;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>allowable discharge practices;\nand, <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>when the State may grant a\nfacility a \u201cvariance\u201d\u2014or waiver\u2014from governing rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key Differences\nBetween Long-Term Care Facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As explained in depth in the guide, there are three types\nof long-term care facilities in Vermont:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nursing Homes provide skilled nursing,\nrehabilitation services, and 24-hour health services. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assisted Living Residences combine home, health, and supportive\nservices while promoting self-direction and resident independence. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residential Care Homes provide room,\nboard, personal care, medication management, and some nursing \u201coverview,\u201d but are\nrestricted in the level of care they can provide and generally do <em>not<\/em> provide full-time nursing care. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There <em>are<\/em>\nrestrictions on who may become (and remain as) a resident at assisted living residences\nand residential care homes, but not nursing homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/cap\/files\/2020\/01\/Consumer-Guide-to-Long-Term-Care.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/cap\/files\/2020\/01\/Consumer-Guide-to-Long-Term-Care.png 940w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/cap\/files\/2020\/01\/Consumer-Guide-to-Long-Term-Care-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/cap\/files\/2020\/01\/Consumer-Guide-to-Long-Term-Care-768x644.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/cap\/files\/2020\/01\/Consumer-Guide-to-Long-Term-Care-358x300.png 358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Need to report\na concern?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This guide also provides contact information for\nreporting concerns about long-term care facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-background has-fixed-layout\" style=\"background-color:#e7f5fe\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/dlp.vermont.gov\/aps\">Adult Protective   Services<\/a><br \/>1-800-564-1612   <\/td><td>To report abuse, neglect or exploitation of a resident in   a long-term care facility. <em>Also contact   the police &amp;
