{"id":1240,"date":"2022-02-09T15:30:44","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T20:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/cap\/?p=1240"},"modified":"2022-06-29T10:59:24","modified_gmt":"2022-06-29T14:59:24","slug":"rapidly-trying-to-get-a-free-rapid-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/cap\/rapidly-trying-to-get-a-free-rapid-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Rapidly Trying to Get a FREE Rapid COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Crystal Baldwin&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>First in a&nbsp;Two-Part&nbsp;Series on Free COVID-19&nbsp;Test&nbsp;Kits<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Christmas day, I found out I was a close contact to someone who had tested positive&nbsp;for&nbsp;COVID-19.&nbsp;Testing sites were closed for the holidays, and&nbsp;I hadn\u2019t yet&nbsp;purchased any&nbsp;rainy day rapid COVID test kits. So, I did what many of you have had to, I hunkered down&nbsp;and waited until I was able to schedule a&nbsp;PCR&nbsp;test.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a month later now, I have been obtaining test kits from anywhere humanly possible; but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/blog\/2022\/01\/how-avoid-buying-fake-covid-tests-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not from scammers<\/a>.&nbsp;I\u2019ll admit, it\u2019s been tricky figuring out not only which tests&nbsp;have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19-emergency-use-authorizations-medical-devices\/in-vitro-diagnostics-euas-antigen-diagnostic-tests-sars-cov-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FDA clearance<\/a>, but also,&nbsp;how to obtain&nbsp;free test kits.&nbsp;I&nbsp;was dismayed when I called&nbsp;pharmacies&nbsp;and&nbsp;was&nbsp;provided the same message:&nbsp;<em>No test kits in stock<\/em>.&nbsp;I decided not to search the internet, predicting it would be a fruitless effort&nbsp;ripe with fake kits and hiked prices and store fronts offering freebies\u2014which I knew to be impossible at the time\u2014while requiring a steep payment for shipping and handling.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/cap\/files\/2022\/02\/IMAG3408-1-834x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1261\" width=\"181\" height=\"224\" \/><figcaption>At-home COVID-19 test kits<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that the holiday demand surge has passed, there are ways to obtain free test kits. Just last week, I ordered from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.covidtests.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>COVIDtests.gov<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;and I managed to be one of the lucky&nbsp;firsts&nbsp;to have an order filled by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sayyescovidhometest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SayYesCOVIDhomeTest.org<\/strong><\/a>. After providing my name, delivery address and email, they promised to send four test kits to my&nbsp;house:&nbsp;free of charge. And they did.&nbsp;The kits arrived in an Amazon smile box. While their site currently says they are out of stock, folks should check back as test kits will become available again for distribution.&nbsp;I submitted a request&nbsp;to COVIDtests.gov, too. The&nbsp;site&nbsp;redirected me to the US Postal Service site, USPS.com, where I merrily provided my information&nbsp;for my kits to be mailed to me&nbsp;when they are available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have not yet obtained a test kit from the&nbsp;pharmacy. However,&nbsp;I am looking forward to when the stores are well-stocked so that I can&nbsp;purchase&nbsp;them&nbsp;as&nbsp;needed&nbsp;and submit a request for reimbursement to my health insurance provider.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background has-blue-background-color has-blue-color is-style-default\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>At-home&nbsp;tests kits are now covered by&nbsp;private&nbsp;health insurance.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9eef7\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Private&nbsp;health insurance:&nbsp;Each person&nbsp;covered by the plan&nbsp;<\/strong>can get free&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;test&nbsp;kits&nbsp;by&nbsp;submitting a request for reimbursement&nbsp;claim form\u2014up to&nbsp;<strong>eight test kits per month<\/strong>&nbsp;for tests purchased since December 2021.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Visit your insurance provider\u2019s website or contact them directly for more information. For your convenience, I have included&nbsp;claim&nbsp;form&nbsp;links to common private health insurance providers&nbsp;in Vermont:&nbsp;<ul><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bluecrossvt.org\/documents\/member-claim-form\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Cross Blue&nbsp;Shield&nbsp;of Vermont<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" kits&nbsp;through&nbsp;public health insurance coverage, such as Medicare and Medicaid,&nbsp;is managed differently:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#d9eef7\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Medicaid:<\/strong>&nbsp;Programs are required to cover FDA-authorized at-home COVID-19 tests&nbsp;purchased at the pharmacy counter&nbsp;with a valid prescription.&nbsp;Note that&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dfr.vermont.gov\/sites\/finreg\/files\/doc_library\/vdh-order-distribution-covid19-at-home-antigen-tests.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Vermont\u2019s&nbsp;Commissioner of Health,&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Mark Levine issued a standing order&nbsp;that may be used by Vermont residents as a prescription or&nbsp;third-party prescription<\/a>&nbsp;to obtain COVID-19 At-Home Antigen Test Kits&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/dfr.vermont.gov\/at-home-covid-tests\" target=\"_blank\">dfr.vermont.gov<\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/how-to-get-your-at-home-OTC-COVID-19-test-for-free\" target=\"_blank\">cms.gov<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Medicare<\/strong>:&nbsp;While at-home antigen test kits cannot currently be purchased&nbsp;and reimbursed by Medicare, COVID-19&nbsp;diagnostic&nbsp;tests&nbsp;ordered by an authorized health care professional and&nbsp;performed by a laboratory&nbsp;are.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Further, those with Medicare coverage can seek&nbsp;to obtain&nbsp;free at-home test kits&nbsp;directly&nbsp;from&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov\/?zip=05401&amp;radius=250&amp;incrementalsearch=false\" target=\"_blank\">community health centers and Medicare-certified health clinics<\/a>&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/how-to-get-your-at-home-OTC-COVID-19-test-for-free\" target=\"_blank\">cms.gov<\/a>).&nbsp;Medicare Advantage plans may offer additional coverage and payment.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In early spring, coverage updates&nbsp;to Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans will&nbsp;include&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/news-alert\/biden-harris-administration-will-cover-free-over-counter-covid-19-tests-through-medicare\" target=\"_blank\">free over-the-counter COVID-19 test&nbsp;kits<\/a>&nbsp;as well.&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/news-alert\/biden-harris-administration-will-cover-free-over-counter-covid-19-tests-through-medicare\" target=\"_blank\">cms.gov<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When purchasing from the pharmacy,&nbsp;I plan to check on availability&nbsp;when I happen&nbsp;to be in the store, rather than calling&nbsp;and occupying&nbsp;their phone line&nbsp;while they are short-staffed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll keep my eyes and ears open for&nbsp;notices about free test kit availability from trusted sources, like the Vermont Department of Health, Community Health Centers, schools, employers and&nbsp;local&nbsp;government, while keeping in mind that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthvermont.gov\/covid-19\/testing\/where-get-tested\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free PCR testing remains an option&nbsp;throughout the state<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<strong>You Can&nbsp;Get Free&nbsp;COVID-19&nbsp;Test&nbsp;Kits!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image
