first visit 10. 15. 23

the view from under the mighty pine i sit near

date: 10. 15. 23

location: my spot

weather: a cozy 52 F, overcast, slight breeze

time: 4:35 pm

Yesterday I made the ten minute trek down to Centennial Woods to finalize my spot. I had visited about a week before, hiking around to find a spot, but I felt pressure, every corner turned wondering if it was the best place to spend much time within this semester and the next. So, I left myself to ponder. When I visited yesterday I finalized my spot, and I am excited to start observing.

How to find my spot:

  1. Enter Centennial Woods
  2. Follow the path down, past the first sign
  3. Walk across the wood plank board walk
  4. Pass the muddy buddy sign & cross over the stream
  5. Hike past the second sign, take the trail as it turns right
    • If you are heading up a steep hill, you are going the right way
  6. Look to the left of the path and take the small trail up
    • Trail is on the left when you observe the concrete wall on the right of the trail
  7. Follow this path up and right until you reach a massive fallen tree, and further a dead pine
  8. Sit in front of the mighty pine, parallel to the dead pine

Final Spot:

where i sit^ + alive eastern white pine + dead eastern white pine

So, why did I choose this spot?

This spot is accessible to me as a student of UVM. It is near campus and I envision myself walking out there (hopefully) once a week. Also, this spot contains an expansive diversity of vegetation, especially of native trees we have learned about. I am excited to observe the ecological changes the seasons bring (phenology) and can’t wait to share my observations. 🙂

a (simple) sketch of where i sit and the land i look over. the dead white pine i frequently reference is not drawn but would be about ten feet to the right of the eastern white pine i am in front of.
