4. 29. 24 – bioblitz!

This weekend we were tasked with participating in Bioblitz, a competition to log local plant and animal life with a broader goal of documenting local species and phenological timelines. I had a very fun time participating in this! I will attach some pictures and write a little more about my experience below.

During this Bioblitz I explored mainly the areas on campus. It was interesting to see which plant life was flourishing in such a populated area like a college campus. My experience using iNaturalist was very positive. I enjoyed taking pictures and the immediate matches it would find for the plant or animal I scanned. I also really liked how the app tells you a lot about the aspects of the organism, such as the prevalence and origins, and how I could view and compare my observations to others nearby. I recorded 12 species, but am sure if I were to go out again I could capture many more.

I guess what was most surprising to me about other countries and regions was just the sheer prevalence of observations on the global map! I think it is so awesome that this website/app exists and think it is an awesome tool to understand the place you reside in better.
