Phenology of Shelburne Farms

Seminole-Weikiva Trail Orlando Florida

Burlington and Orlando are incredibly different places. The Oaks we see here are Southern Live oak, with leaves on them. They will keep their leaves all year long. In Burlington Live Oaks cannot survive due to the freezing temperatures. These trees have Spanish moss growing from them which is native to Florida, and do nothing to harm the tree. Spanish moss takes nutrient from the air, and just uses the tree for support. There is also a Coontie (Zamia integrifolia) which looks like a fern but is actually cycad. The only cycad native to the United States

Orlando Florida Typically does not get below freezing during winter. There will be a few fun days where maybe during the nights it will snow and melt by mid-day. However, In Burlington we see most trees (red oaks, white oaks, maples) have lost their leaves, flowers have died and been uprooted to be planted again next spring/summer. Yet Florida remains mostly unchanged, growing season is most of the year and it stays warm.
