{"id":9991,"date":"2018-11-25T01:20:13","date_gmt":"2018-11-25T06:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/?p=9991"},"modified":"2021-06-10T08:56:02","modified_gmt":"2021-06-10T13:56:02","slug":"heads-in-the-sands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2018\/11\/25\/heads-in-the-sands\/","title":{"rendered":"Heads in the sands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not surprising that the Trump administration would wish to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/environment\/2018\/11\/government-climate-report-issues-dire-warning-of-worsening-us-disasters-from-climate-change.html\">bury<\/a> the nearly 1700-page <a href=\"https:\/\/nca2018.globalchange.gov\/\">Fourth National Climate Asessment, Volume 2: Impacts, Risks, and Adaptation in the United States<\/a>, a report written by over 300 scientists representing 13 federal agencies, by having it released on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_Friday_(shopping)\">Black Friday<\/a>, the day after Thanksgiving when most Americans are too busy shopping (or sleeping off their holiday revelry) to pay attention to anything.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just Trump&#8217;s (and other Republicans&#8217;) coziness with the oil and gas industries, and their dislike of the implications of climate science, that accounts for it. It&#8217;s also that they are busily gutting government while they can (as Fintan O&#8217;Toole <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/articles\/2018\/12\/06\/trump-saboteur-in-chief\/?fbclid=IwAR2kTInTcnd-mOVKe3JyaFoFsmgJepH1rwexjS27AO72Jkc-VGwH6PdvGRc\">explains in this week&#8217;s New York Review of Books<\/a>) and the report makes it painfully <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/11\/23\/health\/climate-change-report-bn\/index.html\">clear<\/a> what that kind of strategy will lead to.
