Find where nature and culture (river and engineering) slam into each other in a passionate wave. Ride it.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LTTct6xBIc8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Observations: To enjoy it at all, you have to be good. Some of these guys (and women) are really good. If you stay up for more than the first couple of seconds, you&#8217;re in. 15 seconds, you&#8217;re good. 25 seconds, you&#8217;re great. A minute would be awesome; I didn&#8217;t see it, but some came close (into the 40s). Finally, when\u00a0 you gotta go down, find a graceful way to do it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->2. Watching it is pretty captivating.  I ask my film students, when we talk about affect, to pay attention to where in their bodies they feel a film event. Watching these surfers I feel my whole gut, throat and chest down to intestines and legs, tense and vibrate. If I went with it, I&#8217;d go into some altered, kundalini-activated state. But if you&#8217;re  Bron Taylor and do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brontaylor.com\/environmental_books\/dgr\/green_religion_ch_5.html\">surfing spirituality studies<\/a>, this is a great fieldwork op. (Bron will be in Munich as a Rachel Carson fellow next year, so I hope he&#8217;ll do it.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=munich+surfing+&amp;aq=f\">More here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3. When you&#8217;ve had enough, walk around the block to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hausderkunst.de\/\">Haus der Kunst<\/a> and see the brilliant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hausderkunst.de\/en\/current\/aktuell\/aschemuender_goetz_collection_in_the_haus_der_kunst.php\">collection<\/a> of film and video works on war and post-war trauma in the building&#8217;s former air raid shelter basement &#8212; by a star-studded cast including Harun Farocki, Mona Hatoum, William Kentridge, Marcel Odenbach, Tracey Moffatt, and others. Almost all are very good; some, like William Kentridge&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/IJ-c4N2njwg\">Tide Table<\/a>, Sven Johne&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.svenjohne.de\/svenjohne_work_tears.html\">Tears of the Eyewitness<\/a>, and Anri Sala&#8217;s Nocturnes (below), are excellent, and the curatorial decisions &#8212; like putting Oscar Mu\u00f1oz&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/vivafilmfestival.posterous.com\/art-review-oscar-munoz-biografias\">Biografias<\/a> &#8212; in the shower room, genuinely inspired.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dSV7Xo4IRlo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Then see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.grossekunstausstellungmuenchen.de\/\">Tierisch<\/a> exhibit (of becoming-animal art) upstairs, the Theatergarden Bestiarium  (Rodney Graham, Jeff Wall, Glenn Branca, and others) on the main floor, and if you still  have anything left in you &#8212; money included (it&#8217;s 10 euros) &#8212; give  obsessive-compulsive cosmologist Matt Mullican&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contemporaryartdaily.com\/2011\/06\/matt-mullican-at-haus-der-kunst\/\">Organizing the World<\/a> a try.
