{"id":2649,"date":"2011-02-15T00:23:12","date_gmt":"2011-02-15T05:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/?p=2649"},"modified":"2011-05-27T08:54:06","modified_gmt":"2011-05-27T13:54:06","slug":"spreading-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2011\/02\/15\/spreading-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Spreading revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times has a couple of nice pieces on the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions: an interactive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/world\/middleeast\/2011-spreading-revolutions.html?nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=thab1#intro\">account of the key events<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/02\/14\/world\/middleeast\/14egypt-tunisia-protests.html?pagewanted=1&amp;_r=1&amp;nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=tha2\">more detailed piece<\/a> outlining the role of the different protest groups, bloggers and Facebook-ites, nonviolent resistance tactics, and the Obama administration.<\/p>\n<p>A few quick thoughts:<\/p>\n<p>1) <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2011\/02\/11\/more-thoughts-on-egypt\/\">Max Forte<\/a> is right about the U.S.&#8217;s equivocation, its policy of &#8220;hedging its bets&#8221; in a mix of realism and opportunism.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->2) But it&#8217;s so much better to have Obama at the helm of global empire than Bush. (Not that it&#8217;s really the helm, but it&#8217;s an important figurehead position.)<\/p>\n<p>3) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeinstein.org\/organizations9173.html\">Gene Sharp<\/a> continues to be an un(der)sung hero-tactician of late-20th\/early-21st century political struggle.<\/p>\n<p>4) There&#8217;s something about &#8220;the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.generation-online.org\/c\/fcmultitude3.htm\">multitude<\/a>&#8221; in these events, in part at least because they come together in and through <em>events<\/em> (including digital events), not personalities or even ideas, and because they grow through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/cup_detail.taf?ti_id=3911\">transmission of affect<\/a>. (I&#8217;ve been reading John Beasley-Murray&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/posthegemony.blogspot.com\/2010\/11\/posthegemony.html\">Posthegemony<\/a> (the book), which he kindly sent me a digital copy of, and it is very good, and quite helpful for thinking about these things.)<\/p>\n<p>5) How long will the <em>Times<\/em> (and <em>The Guardian<\/em> and other actual producers of news) continue to give us their services for (essentially) free?
