{"id":1342,"date":"2010-09-16T18:13:45","date_gmt":"2010-09-16T23:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2010\/09\/16\/just-sitting-there\/"},"modified":"2010-09-16T18:13:45","modified_gmt":"2010-09-16T23:13:45","slug":"just-sitting-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2010\/09\/16\/just-sitting-there\/","title":{"rendered":"just sitting there"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite line in <a href=\"http:\/\/zenpeacemakers.org\/bwblog\/?p=1104\">Patrick Groneman&#8217;s account<\/a> of a group of Buddhist meditators&#8217; attempt to bear witness, by just sitting, amidst the rival armies of 9-11 protestors in downtown New York City (anti-mosque, pro-mosque, et al) is the passer-by yelling<\/p>\n<p><em><b>\u201cThis is New York, don\u2019t just sit there\u2026stand up and say what you believe in.\u201d<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Which made me think: Isn&#8217;t that what blogging is &#8212; everyone standing up and waving their beliefs for everyone else to see?<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, of course, it isn&#8217;t that. Saying something is only one part of communicating; listening is the second, and attending to the ecology of speaking and thinking &#8212; the links made up of one&#8217;s interlocutors, the things spoken of and those left unsaid, the feeling and impulse giving rise to the speaking, and so on &#8212; is the third.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan at <a href=\"http:\/\/dangerousharvests.blogspot.com\/\">Dangerous Harvests<\/a> has a good wrap-up of the debates over <a href=\"http:\/\/dangerousharvests.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/hot-topics-socially-engaged-buddhism.html\">Socially Engaged Buddhism<\/a> that have followed this summer&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zenpeacemakers.org\/soc_eng_bud\/symposium.htm\">symposium<\/a> on that topic. (See also <a href=\"http:\/\/flylikeacrow.wordpress.com\/2010\/09\/15\/my-thoughts-on-socially-engaged-buddhism\/\">Fly Like a Crow<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/santitafarella.wordpress.com\/2010\/09\/14\/an-american-muslim-walks-into-a-bakery\/\">this video<\/a>, shared by Santi Tafarella, stages the encounter between the &#8220;two Americas&#8221; in a way that leaves me a little uncomfortable (because of the ethical issues the experiment raises) but that at least gives us some figures: 6 for (racism), 13 against (and willing to act in defense of a Muslim American&#8217;s rights), and 22 not willing to stand up and say what they believe, or much of anything. That&#8217;s a majority.
