{"id":13156,"date":"2023-02-24T05:30:16","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T10:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/?p=13156"},"modified":"2023-02-24T05:30:34","modified_gmt":"2023-02-24T10:30:34","slug":"a-year-of-full-scale-war-in-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2023\/02\/24\/a-year-of-full-scale-war-in-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"A year of full-scale war in Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My reflections on a year of full-scale war in Ukraine <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-ukrtaz\/2023\/02\/24\/reflections-on-a-year-of-full-scale-war\/\">can be read here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Like Ukrainians in general, whose resistance to the Russian onslaught has been remarkable, President Volodymyr Zelensky has done wonders in so many ways. But one thing neither he nor his western supporters have succeeded at \u2014 as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/02\/23\/world\/russia-ukraine-geopolitics.html\">this\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0analysis shows<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 is convincing the global South to support Ukraine in its struggle. Wartime emergencies call for military support, but diplomatic pressure on Russia also needs to increase, which means that Ukraine\u2019s foreign policy must broaden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no good reasons for postcolonial democracies like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalaffairs.org.au\/australianoutlook\/lulas-geostrategic-framing-in-war-times\/\">Lula\u2019s Brazil<\/a>\u00a0and the ANC\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/news24\/southafrica\/news\/russia-ukraine-war-sas-neutral-position-coming-to-an-end-with-war-games-ukrainian-association-20230222\">South Africa<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalaffairs.org.au\/australianoutlook\/lulas-geostrategic-framing-in-war-times\/\">remain<\/a>\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/opinion\/2023\/02\/22\/commentary\/world-commentary\/russia-ukraine-war-2\/\">neutral<\/a>\u201d in an anti-imperialist, anti-colonial struggle. [&#8230;] Zelensky and western supporters need to make clear that that\u2019s what this is, and that no \u201ctradition\u201d of cold war \u201cnonalignment\u201d makes sense any more. We\u2019re in a new world with new allies and new enemies, whose contours will increasingly be shaped by new conflicts. One of these \u2014 and one whose \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/geopolitique.eu\/en\/issues\/war-ecology-a-new-paradigm\/\">war ecology<\/a>\u201d (to use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/geopolitique.eu\/en\/articles\/war-ecology-a-new-paradigm\/\">Pierre Charbonnier\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0astute phrase) shapes the nature of this conflict already \u2014 is that between fossil-fuel authoritarians (the likes of Putin and Trump) and climate-transitioning democracies (of whom the EU, Biden\u2019s US, and Lula\u2019s Brazil can be leaders).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s high time to shed the old lenses and shape a new global reality.
