{"id":1234,"date":"2010-04-08T06:30:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-08T11:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2010\/04\/08\/philosophy-of-the-moment\/"},"modified":"2010-04-08T06:30:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-08T11:30:00","slug":"philosophy-of-the-moment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2010\/04\/08\/philosophy-of-the-moment\/","title":{"rendered":"philosophy of the moment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jeff Carrera&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/evolutionaryphilosophy.com\/\">Philosophy is Not a Luxury<\/a> has been posting some pithy  articulations of the process-relational philosophies of <a href=\"http:\/\/evolutionaryphilosophy.com\/2010\/04\/05\/the-experience-train-of-william-james-part-ii\/\">James<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/evolutionaryphilosophy.com\/tag\/john-dewey\/\">Dewey<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/evolutionaryphilosophy.com\/2009\/12\/08\/charles-sanders-peirce%E2%80%99s-integrally-evolving-universe\/\">Peirce<\/a>, and others in the American pragmatist tradition. It&#8217;s too bad that the word &#8220;pragmatism&#8221; in its everyday sense doesn&#8217;t do justice to these thinkers &#8212; rather like the terms &#8220;stoicism&#8221; and &#8220;epicureanism&#8221; don&#8217;t do justice to the philosophies of Seneca, Epicurus, Epictetus, Lucretius, Marcus Aurelius, et al. As <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=RNDmvMrpr4YC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=hadot+philosophy+way+life&amp;ei=1T67S8HKMpX0NKz73dwB&amp;cd=1#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\">Pierre Hadot<\/a> pointed out years ago, philosophy was a way of life for the ancients. The pragmatists came as close as any American philosophers to continuing that tradition. To anyone familiar with Whitehead, Bergson, or Deleuze, the resonances with these <a href=\"http:\/\/evolutionaryphilosophy.com\/2010\/03\/30\/the-experience-train-of-william-james-part-i\/\">descriptions<\/a> of experience should be obvious.
