Amy is the author of three previous books, <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=PJK_aJcgvAwC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=douglas+amy&amp;ei=-Cc6SrDOHI22yQTfyZi8Aw\">The Politics of Environmental Mediation <\/a>(Columbia University Press, 1987), <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=-G46rVRXkY0C&amp;dq=douglas+amy&amp;source=gbs_summary_s&amp;cad=0\">Behind the Ballot Box<\/a> (Greenwood, 2000), and <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=PJK_aJcgvAwC&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=douglas+amy&amp;ei=-Cc6SrDOHI22yQTfyZi8Aw\">Real Choices\/New Voices <\/a>(Columbia U. Press, 2002). His latest book, <a href=\"http:\/\/governmentisgood.com\/\">Government is Good: An Unapologetic Defense of a Vital Institution<\/a>, was published online a year and a half ago and has already found more readers &#8212; from over 50 countries &#8212; than his previous three books combined, gaining him more feedback and getting picked up by many online discussion groups. <a href=\"http:\/\/governmentisgood.com\/\">The web site is well organized and attractive<\/a>, and <a title=\"Views: Adventures in Web Publishing - Inside Higher Ed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/views\/2009\/06\/18\/amy\">the article<\/a> includes some useful pointers on how to do it even better.<\/p>\n<p>An example of an online publication that makes much more extensive use of the medium is Mackenzie Wark&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futureofthebook.org\/gamertheory\/\">GAM3R 7H30RY<\/a>; see <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/free\/v52\/i47\/47a02001.htm\">the Chronicle of Higher Ed&#8217;s review<\/a> of it. (Wark&#8217;s earlier <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=G4xWtJo_MeQC&amp;pg=PT1&amp;lpg=PT1&amp;dq=mackenzie+wark+virtual+geography&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=myQVk9bo-z&amp;sig=NZfH58jd5Dhltv4aIvHOaDw2HbQ&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=xEM6SvukC46alAfFjonzDQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=1#PPP1,M1\">Virtual Geography: Living with Global Media Events<\/a> remains one of the best studies of the global media&#8217;s penetration into everyday life. It needs updating, though &#8212; and the current crisis in Iran begs for Wark&#8217;s treatment.)<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s, of course, a lot more to be said about the promises and perils of digital scholarly publishing, with the question of peer review being a big issue for those who debate it. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thevalve.org\/go\/valve\/article\/on_the_future_of_academic_publishing_peer_review_and_tenure_requirements_or\">Kathleen Fitzsimmons&#8217; piece <\/a>from a few years ago gets at some of these issues, and there&#8217;s been much discussion over at <a href=\"http:\/\/mediacommons.futureofthebook.org\/\">Media Commons<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futureofthebook.org\/blog\/\">if:book<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hastac.org\/scholars\">HASTAC <\/a>(Humanities, Arts, Science, and Technology Advanced Collaboratory) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hastac.org\/scholars\/forum\/11-02-08Academic-Publishing-in-the-Digital-Age\">Academic Publishing in the Digital Age <\/a>web sites.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mount Holyoke College political science professor Douglas Amy makes a good case for publishing online in this piece in today&#8217;s Inside Higher Ed.
