I find that the upbeat electronica soundtrack (on the above YouTube video) trivializes the images, making them almost an advertisement for air flight and visualization technology; I would have used something more reflective (recall, for instance, Stars of the Lid&#8217;s Environmental Defense Fund NYC subway campaign &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/aivakhiv.blog.uvm.edu\/2009\/04\/polar_bag.html\">Polar Bears<\/a>&#8221; piece). Compare it with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaronkoblin.com\/work\/flightpatterns\/FPWeb_Final_3.mov\">silent version here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As an accompanying reading, I would suggest <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=wKmKh7slk6wC&amp;pg=PA308&amp;dq=%22barry+lopez%22+flight+%22One+foggy+January+morning+in+1977%22&amp;ei=PpMvStDnNISszgS8wNSXDQ\">Barry Lopez&#8217;s hypnotic account<\/a> of flying on air freighters around the world, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpers.org\/archive\/1995\/10\/0007762\">On the Wings of Commerce<\/a>,&#8221; reprinted as &#8220;Flight&#8221; in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/About-This-Life-Journeys-Threshold\/dp\/0679434542\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1244631644&amp;sr=1-1\">About This Life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Revkin&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/24\/happy-birthday-earthrise\/\">Happy Birthday, Earthrise<\/a>&#8221; post commemorates the original Earthrise photograph. Reading Denis Cosgrove&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.informaworld.com\/smpp\/ftinterface?content=a788921145&amp;rt=0&amp;format=pdf\">Contested Global Visions<\/a>,&#8221; Sheila Jasanoff&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=htulve5KkQMC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PA309&amp;dq=earthrise+photograph+jasanoff+%22image+and+imagination%22+%22environmental+ethics%22&amp;ots=r4Op6zwovl&amp;sig=7v__kNG2GxVeaEkcH6Sh7BgfzyI\">Image and Imagination<\/a>,&#8221; or even Heidegger&#8217;s &#8220;The Age of the World Picture&#8221; could set up a little productive tension with these images.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TmaOcPYCGMA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Those links to some of the art pieces Andy Revkin has posted on Dot Earth could be easily missed on my previous post, so I&#8217;m posting them separately here.
