Or at least Harper&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/harpers.org\/archive\/2019\/10\/findings-october-2019\/\">Findings<\/a>.<\/em> <em>They aren&#8217;t.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a week of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/police-rioted-george-floyd-riots-justifying-protests-2020-6\">police riots<\/a> capping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/05\/29\/how-western-media-would-cover-minneapolis-if-it-happened-another-country\/?fbclid=IwAR2pb_QabaZtkbrHIRx6_tJMkAa6edQMHVbW7b6SKXOQseesHzrg8gG-Cj8\">decades of ethnic violence<\/a> in a country torn asunder by authoritarianism, a dismal economy, and plague, police responding to a bee sting were attacked by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/21\/us\/bee-sting-attacked-california-trnd\/index.html?fbclid=IwAR2SOXOKI50Yf8ji0chSoszZWHN02xDgm_zwU6hvGMael-3TavFFT_4sAcs\">swarm of nearly 40,000 Africanized bees<\/a>. Elsewhere, police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/05\/nyregion\/police-kettling-protests-nyc.html?fbclid=IwAR0PmvdSyaQLd7KHIJhkoI2-u_E3Bpz-oKUZnkJqqe4btW2kM5_cSYeSARo\">&#8220;kettled&#8221; demonstrators and repeatedly charged at them<\/a>, shoving them onto sidewalks, and striking them with batons.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Outside Olympic National Park, gun-toting locals cut down trees to <a href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/speedreads\/918438\/locals-reportedly-trap-family-campers-after-mistaking-antifa\">surround and trap a family of campers<\/a>, including the husband&#8217;s mom and their 16 year old daughter, on the pretext that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peninsuladailynews.com\/crime\/family-harassed-in-forks-after-being-accused-of-being-members-of-antifa\/\">thought they were Antifa.<\/a> An Alabama newspaper called for the Klan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montgomeryadvertiser.com\/story\/news\/2019\/02\/18\/alabama-newspaper-ku-klux-klan-to-night-ride-again-linden-democrat-reporter-goodloe-sutton\/2910436002\/\">to &#8220;night ride again<\/a>,&#8221; and Republicans wondered aloud whether the videotaped killing of George Floyd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/george-floyd-a-staged-event-says-bexar-county-gop-chair-cynthia-brehm\/ar-BB152Vwq?ocid=spartandhp&amp;li=BBnb7Kz&amp;fbclid=IwAR3a49egKHNXTt17aLrbPM2UiDqGoD4767ZQN3JJTjfMPDvRTY11GB8JIVk\">was staged<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the country&#8217;s faltering president blamed Germany, China, and the World Health Organization for its ills, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a32781804\/watch-lightning-strike-washington-monument\/\">lightning struck<\/a> the capital city&#8217;s most conspicuous monument. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/05\/29\/how-western-media-would-cover-minneapolis-if-it-happened-another-country\/?fbclid=IwAR2pb_QabaZtkbrHIRx6_tJMkAa6edQMHVbW7b6SKXOQseesHzrg8gG-Cj8\">It\u2019s sad that the Americans don\u2019t have a government that can get them coronavirus tests or even monthly checks to be able to feed their families,<\/a>\u201d said Charlotte Johnson, a 18-year-old Liberian student activist,\u00a0who survived the Ebola pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported that the results are in for remote learning: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/schools-coronavirus-remote-learning-lockdown-tech-11591375078?fbclid=IwAR0B5yJe96UZjRdTKfOZAn0CVTdA_84-uqghH_X2-A7en63h0u5xXvJGimE\">It didn&#8217;t work<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a week of startling developments, some things still sound like they&#8217;re from The Onion.
