{"id":693,"date":"2014-07-30T12:02:25","date_gmt":"2014-07-30T16:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-ukrtaz\/?p=693"},"modified":"2014-07-30T12:02:25","modified_gmt":"2014-07-30T16:02:25","slug":"conservatives-greens-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-ukrtaz\/2014\/07\/30\/conservatives-greens-russia\/","title":{"rendered":"Conservatives, greens, &amp; Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that conservative groups &#8212; including the self-proclaimed media &#8220;watchdog&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Accuracy_in_Media\">Accuracy in Media (AIM)<\/a> &#8212;\u00a0are now using Russia to try to discredit western environmentalist&#8217; opposition to fracked natural gas and shale oil production.<\/p>\n<p>See AIM director Cliff Kincaid&#8217;s article &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aim.org\/aim-column\/moscow-mobilizes-its-american-agents\/\">Moscow Mobilizes its American Agents<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->(On other AIM activities, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwingwatch.org\/category\/organizations\/accuracy-media\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/tags\/accuracy-in-media\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>This, to my mind, provides all the more reason for western greens and climate activists to\u00a0collaborate with their peers around the world &#8212; including in\u00a0Russia, which is the world&#8217;s leading natural gas producer and exporter, and also has the largest shale oil reserves in Eurasia.<\/p>\n<p>The strategy of some western leftists to oppose U.S. influence in Ukraine, while condoning Russia&#8217;s, only serves to marginalize pro-democracy <em>and<\/em> environmentalist groups in both\u00a0Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>As German Greens and others have long argued, democracy and ecology (and nonviolence and internationalism) go hand in hand.
