Here is the call:

Russia’s full-scale invasion has triggered the largest wave of emigration from Ukraine in modern history. Millions of Ukrainians have found themselves scattered across the globe, and a significant number will likely remain abroad even after the war ends. As they rebuild their lives, navigate discrimination and stereotypes, and organize to support their homeland, the historical experience of the 20th-century Ukrainian diaspora becomes increasingly relevant.

While the ‘older’ Ukrainian diaspora is traditionally associated with right-wing nationalist organizations, its history also encompasses a diverse raft of left-wing figures, organizations, and movements. In certain periods, these groups even held a dominant position within Ukrainian communities, particularly in Canada. We would like to dedicate the next Commons print issue to these lesser-known chapters of history.

Specifically, we aim to shed light on the emigrant activities of Ukrainian socialist figures, their relationships with the international Left, and Ukrainian participation in local host-country organizations and political parties. We are interested not only in Ukraine-oriented diaspora activism but in the struggle for the socio-economic rights of Ukrainian immigrants within their new communities as well.

We encourage submissions addressing this thematic scope (though topics are not strictly limited to iе). In addition to analyses, Commons publishes reviews, interviews, and reports. Honorariums are provided for all published materials.

Estimated length of the analytical articles is 3,000 to 6,000 words, but for reviews and interviews shorter lengths are welcome. Please format your contribution according to the guidelines. This ensures we can properly format and present your work in the print edition.

All submissions will undergo a review process, where they will be evaluated based on the relevance and depth of coverage, clarity, accessibility, structural integrity, factual accuracy and methodological rigor. Manuscripts that do not meet these standards will either be returned for revision or even rejected. We strongly advise authors to keep these criteria in mind from the outset of the writing process.

Please send your contributions (including a brief abstract) by October 1, 2026, to our editorial email (editor@commons.com.ua).

We look forward to your contributions to this upcoming issue!

From: https://commons.com.ua/en/drukovanyi-nomer-pro-ukrainsku-livu-diasporu-open-call/

Commons (Спільне) Journal has issued a call for papers and written contributions for an upcoming print issue focusing on the Ukrainian Left Diaspora.
