{"id":1255,"date":"2022-05-15T12:23:55","date_gmt":"2022-05-15T16:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-ukrtaz\/?p=1255"},"modified":"2022-05-15T12:27:21","modified_gmt":"2022-05-15T16:27:21","slug":"musical-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-ukrtaz\/2022\/05\/15\/musical-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"Musical politics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As Ukrainian performers Kalush Orchestra, whose &#8220;political statement&#8221; was <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/05\/eurovision-song-contest-ukraine-kalush-orchestra-political-statement-ebu-1235024105\/\">allowed<\/a> by Eurovision organizers for &#8220;humanitarian reasons,&#8221; went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/05\/14\/arts\/eurovision-final\">win the Eurovision Song Contest<\/a> (while Russian performers were banned), and as Vladimir Putin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/may\/09\/putin-victory-day-speech-rehash-grievances-west-russia-ukraine\">continues to complain<\/a> about western &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/media\/2022\/03\/25\/putin-conservative-cancel-culture\/\">cancel culture<\/a>&#8221; (while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/05\/03\/russia-putin-exodus\/\">canceling those<\/a> who disagree with him), the arts world more generally has come to heavily feature the cultural politics surrounding Russia&#8217;s ongoing war on Ukraine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/ukraine-wins-eurovision-2022-victory-politics-music-rcna28885\">Ani Bundel writes<\/a> that Eurovision has always been &#8220;a stand-in&#8221; for the political climate, despite organizers&#8217; insistence that it is not. The same thing can be seen in other places on the musical spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time&#8217;s Andrew Chow writes about how &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6176595\/nina-kraviz-russia-ukraine-war\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=sfmc&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter%20brief%20default%20ac&amp;utm_content=%20%20%2020220515%20%20%20body&amp;et_rid=207519531&amp;lctg=207519531&amp;fbclid=IwAR2OinaLGK1GoTUCmq6Q2lqZoE7pjdbkI7KnMczghKBTefIz-AfEs96EK0s\">A Russian DJ&#8217;s Silence About Ukraine is Dividing the Electronic Music Scene<\/a>.&#8221; The scene, as Chow writes, is divided between people like Clone Distribution&#8217;s Serge Verschuur &#8212; for whom &#8220;the house and techno scene [has] stood up for&#8221; (and been &#8220;built by&#8221;) &#8220;minorities, for the less privileged, for the oppressed&#8221; &#8212; and, on the other hand, the &#8220;toxic positivity&#8221; of the ravers who want to &#8220;have fun&#8221; and not &#8220;think about anything.&#8221; In contrast to DJ Nina Kraviz are others like Ukrainian DJ Nastia and Russian DJ Buttechno, who urges his fellow Russians &#8220;to admit the imperialistic and colonizing approach of Russian culture and politics throughout Russian history.\u201d   <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/l.facebook.com\/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Ftime.com%2F6176595%2Fnina-kraviz-russia-ukraine-war%2F%3Futm_medium%3Demail%26utm_source%3Dsfmc%26utm_campaign%3Dnewsletter%2520brief%2520default%2520ac%26utm_content%3D%2520%2520%252020220515%2520%2520%2520body%26et_rid%3D207519531%26lctg%3D207519531%26fbclid%3DIwAR2OinaLGK1GoTUCmq6Q2lqZoE7pjdbkI7KnMczghKBTefIz-AfEs96EK0s&amp;h=AT16PoN01-vUtetF_PFK4te5SoRuKIE-cOMd11WdBzEdsM-v5OOl3-mIViail8bRVRlkPuNa5EXbBo0WjRE3ATOaVyjpeLk0G5sVTMp8BnysYNP_-JReX80SxypB3EjaqPRfxzA&amp;__tn__=H-R&amp;c[0]=AT28Y2E4Ejec7NmSSI2QAY4lVNtEH1D3vkeXl_-IQeXG1JGzZcmqYUm7G3gDQlk9zO-eTFJlGiAMAmM6M5JdVzHbHf0FZEnhe0wgWfPa3a4bno4PZ3x5MgYDOM_CMkcpXKwgd1-GALgyBoEMcPi_pXAwgOg\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/13\/arts\/music\/ukraine-classical-music.html?action=click&amp;module=Well&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;section=Music\">writing in the <em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>, Gabrielle Cornish describes Ukrainian musical modernism and its destruction at the hands of Stalinism.
