(Think of walking into a QAnon forum and hearing about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/politics\/articles\/2022-02-24\/a-quarter-of-republicans-believe-central-views-of-qanon-conspiracy-movement\">Satan-worshipping, cannibalistic, pedophilic babykillers<\/a> of the U.S. Democratic Party.) That a state government might come to create its own <a href=\"https:\/\/library.oapen.org\/handle\/20.500.12657\/28351\">alternate reality<\/a> should, therefore, be not as shocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-95425c80-6cd1-4e64-bf79-400f9e3cfed2\">In the case of the current Russian invasion, the term &#8220;denazification&#8221; has played a puzzling role that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2022\/2\/24\/22948944\/putin-ukraine-nazi-russia-speech-declare-war\">some<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/03\/23\/putin-genocide-language-ukraine-wipe-out-state-identity\/\">Timothy Snyder<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/feb\/25\/vladimir-putin-ukraine-attack-antisemitism-denazify\">Jason Stanley<\/a>, have tried to demystify. But Russian neo-imperialist (and former Yanukovych advisor) Tymofei Sergeitsev, in his new RIA Novosti piece &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/xn--%20%20%20%20%20-zlmdg8devq5btzxmh5crcdfv5bzamanhl0a4c2ixkle\/\">\u0427\u0442\u043e \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438\u044f \u0434\u043e\u043b\u0436\u043d\u0430 \u0441\u0434\u0435\u043b\u0430\u0442\u044c \u0441 \u0423\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0438\u043d\u043e\u0439<\/a>&#8221; (&#8220;What Russia Should Do to Ukraine&#8221;), has just provided a pretty clear demonstration that it is really just a Russian code word for &#8220;de-Ukrainization&#8221; &#8212; in other words, for what may simply be called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/ukraine-bucha-war-crimes-genocide-b2050897.html\">genocide<\/a>. The Ukraine Crisis Media Center has helpfully <a href=\"https:\/\/uacrisis.org\/en\/justification-of-genocide-russia-has-openly-declared-its-desire-to-exterminate-ukrainians-as-a-nation?fbclid=IwAR1nfYHsVnc0Z21DjnWDYuAQHdfdOJ5NVVniPgMpyGZTdlEFO-NLTBw5U68\">translated the piece here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2d5469da-61aa-4169-90dc-6fcb2eeb7505\">Sergei Sumlenny&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sumlenny\/status\/1510168073831165956?s=20&amp;t=XQD2UMhpxqmwU_JZ2L1pVQ&amp;fbclid=IwAR1kRT238znvzJeuUL4fnimqrlZY-kFZT63mtitsSLpvYiu_aS1S256yOBY\">Twitter thread<\/a> from a couple of days ago suggests that mass executions, of the kind found these last few days in places like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/photography\/interactive\/2022\/photos-of-bucha-ukraine\/\">Bucha<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/03\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war-russia-trostyanets.html\">Trostyanets<\/a>, seem to have been part of Russia&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/international\/article-698890\">solution to the Ukrainian question<\/a>&#8221; all along. (Russian responses to these revelations have of course involved further <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/60981238\">mystification<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-fe949ee5-c8d7-4df1-b311-390cd4c2882e\">Adding together the mass production of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/imrussia.org\/media\/pdf\/Research\/Michael_Weiss_and_Peter_Pomerantsev__The_Menace_of_Unreality.pdf\">unreality<\/a>&#8221; by Russian state media with Putin&#8217;s now explicit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/16\/world\/europe\/putin-russia-ukraine-protests.html\">targeting of &#8220;the West<\/a>&#8221; as its enemy means that war &#8212; informational, and therefore hybrid war, that is, the kind of war that is native to the twenty-first century &#8212; is already upon not only Ukraine, but all of us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The turns of phrase one finds in the echo chambers of the internet can be puzzling to newcomers.
