{"id":287,"date":"2017-05-18T15:50:43","date_gmt":"2017-05-18T19:50:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-acene\/?p=287"},"modified":"2017-05-18T15:50:43","modified_gmt":"2017-05-18T19:50:43","slug":"the-sf-of-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-acene\/2017\/05\/18\/the-sf-of-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"The SF of Sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Re-posted from <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv\/2017\/05\/18\/the-sf-of-sustainability\/\">Immanence<\/a>:<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"_1dwg _1w_m\">\n<div id=\"js_2m1\" class=\"_5pbx userContent\">\n<p>Since it\u2019s the Holocene\u00a0that has provided the conditions for the (human-led) biogeochemical experimentation that has now likely achieved a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/fact-or-fiction-runaway-greenhouse\/\">runaway<\/a> state, and since \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holocene\">Holocene<\/a>\u201d was never anything other than a placeholder term \u2014 it only means \u201centirely new\u201d \u2014 it seems inappopriate to replace it with the term \u201cAnthropocene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHolocene\u201d begins as a leap of faith \u2014 that this <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Interglacial\">interglacial<\/a>\u00a0may somehow be\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/2015RG000503\/full\">different from previous<\/a> Pleistocene interglacials. Until the evidence for that becomes conclusive \u2014 that is, until planetary systems settle into a new and different holding pattern \u2014 we should just call our era the \u201cLate Holocene\u201d and leave it at that (i.e., ambiguous). We have no idea how it will end or what will follow; we only know it\u2019s likely to be short. The dream of human sustainability is still mostly science-fiction. (Even if indigenous cultures have shown it\u2019s not entirely unimaginable.)<\/p>\n<p>All that said, \u201cAnthropocene\u201d is a good conversation starter. We\u2019ll need a new one in a few years.
