{"id":267,"date":"2015-11-09T12:38:31","date_gmt":"2015-11-09T16:38:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-acene\/?p=267"},"modified":"2015-11-09T12:38:31","modified_gmt":"2015-11-09T16:38:31","slug":"wark-on-moores-capitalocene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-acene\/2015\/11\/09\/wark-on-moores-capitalocene\/","title":{"rendered":"Wark on Moore&#8217;s &#8220;Capitalocene&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-acene\/files\/2015\/11\/Moore_-_Capitalism_in_the_Web_of_Life-max_221-28ccec2d6dcf167acd4733a0a8a74581-182x275.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-268\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.uvm.edu\/aivakhiv-acene\/files\/2015\/11\/Moore_-_Capitalism_in_the_Web_of_Life-max_221-28ccec2d6dcf167acd4733a0a8a74581-182x275-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Moore_-_Capitalism_in_the_Web_of_Life-max_221-28ccec2d6dcf167acd4733a0a8a74581-182x275\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>McKenzie Wark gets at some very\u00a0important issues in what we might call \u201cthe ontology of the Anthropocene\u201d in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicseminar.org\/2015\/10\/the-capitalocene\/\">this review<\/a> of Jason Moore\u2019s book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/books\/1924-capitalism-in-the-web-of-life\">Capitalism in the Web of Life<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Moore\u2019s work, as he acknowledges (and as I have argued here before), provides\u00a0an important contribution to rethinking the relations between humanity, the nonhuman world, and the techno-economic formations (such as capitalism) that have mediated those relations. But for Wark, Moore\u2019s dialectical approach goes too far in the direction of social construction, whilst retaining the basic binary of nature and society that Moore critiques as \u201cCartesian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-8426\"><\/span>Summarizing his critique, Wark writes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cThe achievement of Moore\u2019s book is to move past a metaphysical concept of nature towards an historical one. But in the process the various scientific ways of knowing nature are not recognized as valid and at least partially autonomous.
