Final Phenology Visit – May 4

There have been very minimal changes to my site besides seasonal changes this year. During this recent visit, I noticed that some of the brush and smaller branches had been removed in some way because I was able to walk further along the fallen tree. But I like that nothing major has happened in my spot. I like that it is still the same place I’ve been going to all year. I like its fallen tree and the standing trees almost holding it in place. I like the sounds of the stream and the uprooted bottom of the tree, and how you can see the roots protruding from the dirt it used to bury deep into. This spot and all of Centennial Woods feel like a representation of what UVM stands for and the intersection of nature and academia, where students can use the forest as an opportunity to observe nature from a scientific standpoint or use it to escape from whatever stresses they may be experiencing. I am glad to have been able to visit this spot throughout the year and become familiar with it, but I would still consider myself a visitor or spectator, and not a part of my place. I try to not disturb my spot much when I visit, and in that way, I think I have avoided, to the best of my ability, making much of a presence or causing disturbance in my spot.

Here is an audio recording of the sounds I heard during my final visit:
