Synchronous Classes via Quicktime video

Gagan Mirchandani, Professor Electrical&Computer Engrn asked me…

I am looking into the matter of having my Fall class lectures available to people in our local industries. I am not aware of my options. Ideally, I would like to have my lectures videoed in one our classroom in Votey building and have them available to the aformentioned group in real- time. Could I meet with you and discuss options? My department may have a small amount of funds for equipment purchase but I would need to get to that soon. Please let me know.

I told him about

  • desktop solutions: Quicktime Broadcaster, RealProducer
  • mysterious CE solutions: HorizonLive
  • bigtime solutions: Instructional Television

he liked quicktime broadcaster, and said he’ll give that a try. He has a dual 2.7 GHz G5 Powermac (just replaced his 15 year old DEC Alpha) in his office, will use that and a long cable.
