I am a newer addition to TechCATs but I think that the most useful thing I’ve learned since becoming a TechCAT is to use the resources that UVM provides. Like others the library can be a huge place when you’re new to UVM, but once you start using it you find places such as the media lab with friendly people working who are good at helping you out with media projects. I’ve also learned about how far being polite can take you (even though I’ve always known this).
One of the most useful things I’ve learned about is Adobe Photoshop of it’s wide variety of uses for different projects and whatnot. Also, learning about it made me realize just how much more was around for editing photos and graphics!
Hands down the most useful thing I’ve learned since joining Techcats is to use Google when I’m not sure about a technical question. There are tons of forums on just about any type of question you may have. Also, Google has lots of specialized search engines which are great for research because they filter out the .com sites and just give you documents published in journals and such (Patents, Scholar, and Book search engines).
Another great thing about Techcats is we learned how to make basic websites. This helped tremendously when I was doing my senior project and we had to make a simple site to present our work. I didn’t know that every student was given public space in his/her zoo account for a website before I worked here.
I think the most useful thing I’ve learned since becoming a TechCat is about all the available software, hardware, and tutorials UVM has to offer it’s students, for free. Before I worked down here, I didn’t know there was a place on campus that I could work on movies, photos, and other media. I thought I had to buy my own mac for all of this.
Now that I’ve worked here for awhile, the other TechCats have taught me quite a bunch as well. We share stories from down in the lab, and what we learned from it and different programs we’ve tried and how to use them.
I think the most useful one I have learned is Adobe photoshop. I can use it on my own photos, for graphics for my websites, and to make images to import to Adobe Illustrator for posters.
