Earth Week

It was a cold, damp visit to my phenology site– not quite the spring Earth Week I had envisioned. I saw a great deal of leaf litter that was being slowly decomposed by the abundance of Earthworms the spring rains had brought out. The low temperatures recently must have stunned the blooming and budding of wildflowers and flowering trees, as there were not any scattered about my site.

Scattered throughout, however, were an abundance of white pine needles, as well as clumps of moss hugging the rocks and trees– the perfect sites for for new spring life to emerge on even the smallest levels. Worms and small insects are crawling beneath the leaf litter and pine needles, bringing birds out to snack on their spring meals.

A mysterious purple plant among the leaf litter. Surrounded by maple and beech leaves, as well as some moss.
