Our first review of diner Mozz Stix here on the VT Mozz Stix blog. Al’s French Fry’s serves up some mean mozz, $4.25 for 5, it’s a great deal and they’re classic counter service is really good. The mozz stix were very crisp and crunchy, and the mozz was well distributed with just enough creamy meltyness . The marinara paired quite well and made for one of the best mozz stix experiences so far! Make sure to grab a milk shake while you’re there!

One problem many Mozz Stix enthusiasts run into is how to best enjoy a freshly hot mozz stix. You don’t want to wait for it to cool down too much so the mozz is no longer soft, but if it’s fresh from the fryer it’s often just too hot! Some have tried using a fork and knife, but that just does not work, plus you look like a tool! But if it’s too hot you can’t really hold it, so what’s a mozz lover to do! Well try out the Bovee method! Use a napkin to hold the mozz, keeps your fingers clean, and it’s much easier to hold!
After our Winooski excursion we needed to decide who had the top mozz, and honestly it was a clear and unanimous decision, all three places put up a good offering but if you’re in the ‘noosk and need your mozz stix fix, Papa Frank’s is your best bet!

2nd place: McKee’s Pub & Grill
3rd place: Donny’s NY Pizza
Our final stop was at the top of the circle, Mckee’s! Another spot with outdoor seating and very quick service, we decided to time how long it took from 0 – mozz, and here were the results, not too shabby!
With our other two Mozz experiences fresh in our mind, the bar was high for Mckee’s Mozz to step it up! These had a different look and a very different sauce, but could they stand up the the competition?
The largest order, and the most expensive order, McKee’s Stix were very crunch with a great mozz texture, a bit drier and chewier than the others. The sauce was a bit spicy for me – the marinara is supposed to be a compliment not the dominate flavor and here I felt it was a bit overwhelming. Next up was Papa Frank’s, a slightly nicer sit-down Italian restaurant about two blocks up the hill from Donny’s. Service here was certainly not as nice, we were seated at a table and after we ate it took quite a while to actually get the waitress to come and take my card. But now on to the mozz!
Although on the initial look most of us though these looked a bit less appealing than Donny’s, after one bite it was clear these were much better! The mozz was much more of a dominate flavor than crunchy breading, it was very moist and chewy and the mozz was totally evenly distributed. So flavorful the marinara was much less needed with these. These are certainly worth checking out if you’re in Winooski. But now the real question: Could McKee’s beat Papa Franks? Stay tuned…
First Stop on the tour was Donny’s – a little pizza joint at the bottom of the traffic circle. Service was quite good, order at the counter – and the guy even recommended we eat outside, which we did! Took about 5 minutes to get what was a pretty standard looking serving of Mozz Stix.
They looked solid but were not that great, mozz was unevenly distributed – the first one was half empty! The sauce was decent and the breading was fairly flavorful but it was clear these were just some frozen stix and not home made. We gave them a C. At about $5 for 5 it was an ok deal, but you’re probably better off sticking with the pizza here.
Saturday May 11, 2013 was the first ever Mozz Stix Tour of Winooski, VT! We hit up the top three Mozz Stix joints in downtown Winooski… keep following to find reviews from Donny’s NY Pizza, Papa Franks, and McKee’s Pub!
Check it. These are some dope Mozz moons that you can pick up at ONE Pepper Grill in the Old North End (ONE Pepper… get it?) of BTV – really good ratio of Mozz to breading, soft and very gooey inside. Three of these is a prime serving size, they’re a bit hot to start but let ‘um chill and add some of that marinara and you’ll be good to go. $4.25 a serving so a solid deal to be sure.
And now for something completely different… Here we have my good friend JT’s Mozz Stix Deconstructed, more of a fondue really but surprisingly good. The recipe is simple, heat up some olive oil in a skillet, toss in some sliced cheddar until it gets melty, then toss in a bit of Kimchi , mix it up and then eat with carrot stix.
The Kimchi added a nice amount spicy tang along with the sharp bitterness from the cheddar, and although it was very melty and gooey, the crisp carrot stix added a nice crunch! Great little drunk snack that you should all try!
Here we’ve got Friendly’s interpretation of the Mozz Stix, here they do it a bit differently, they’re almost bite size which is great because they just give you a ton! Very soft and moist inside without too much crunchiness. Their marinara is sweet and tangy and goes very well. Far too large of an order for an ordinary man, make sure to bring some friends!
