WordPress has been upgraded to the latest version, 3.3.1. Along with several necessary security fixes, this version improves the layout of the toolbar at the top of the screen (note that the Login link is on the right now), simplifies media uploading–including drag-and-drop into your browser window!–and should have improved performance for people…[Read more]

Blog.uvm.edu has seen some updates recently as I fit it in-between my other work. Not much finished, but things looking better. I’ve overhauled the activity stream so that it is vastly better looking, though it’s still getting tweaked. Any input is welcome. The whole point is so that people can find out what interesting things others at UVM…[Read more]

UVM Blogs has been updated to WordPress 3.2.1. The most noticeable changes are an update to the look of your admin dashboard, a nice “distraction-free” writing mode that simplifies writing new posts, and the introduction of the new, highly customizable “Twenty Eleven” theme.
For a good overview, check this…[Read more]

Any UVM affiliate can have a blog (or many separate blogs, if you want) on blog.uvm.edu. All you have to do is click the “Log in” button up at the top, log in with your UVM NetID & password, and then from the home page, click on “Create a blog”.— Scott Dellinger

I just upgraded UVM Blogs to WordPress 3.1.2. It’s a pretty minor update, so I’m not expecting issues. Last night, I also rolled out the new UVM theme for the top-level blog. Ooh, pretty. Among other things, it brings the most recent several posts from people’s blogs onto the home page. I’m also working on [...]

With the upgrade of UVM Blogs to WordPress 3.1, you’ll notice several changes that are aimed at making blogging even easier than before. New Admin Bar WordPress sports an attractive new admin bar at the top of the screen with direct links to frequently-used actions. Note that several options may be in slightly different places from the old [...]

WordPress 3.1 is out, and has some nice new features . I will try to get blog.uvm.edu upgraded as soon as I can, though we have a lot of plugins and customizations that complicate things, particularly the social features on the top level blog and our hooks into the user account logic that allows us to use [...]

The admin bar at the top of pages on blog.uvm.edu is very useful, and the “My Blogs” menu that shows up when you’re logged in is probably the easiest way to choose between your blogs and post new content to them. Until now, the only blogs listed there were the ones to which you had [...]

After some vendor delay, we have licensed and enabled the Akismet comment spam filter for all blogs. Comments posted in response to articles on your blog will automatically be checked for spammy content so that you will be pestered less often for comment moderation. If a spam comment does get through, simply mark it as [...]

I have just made available the Like and WP-TweetButton plugins to provide the Facebook “Like” and Twitter “Tweet” buttons for your blogs. Once you have activated one or both plugins, you can customize them from the admin dashboard, under Settings -> Facebook Like Button or Settings -> Tweet Button. If you have used these plugins [...]

In a multi-site WordPress installation, blog owners can’t install their own plugins directly because plugins are installed once to be made available for everyone’s blogs, but we are certainly taking requests. Improved mobile support is on the list already, though I’m undecided how exactly yet, and unfortunately, WPhone hasn’t been updated in 18…[Read more]

A new theme, “UVM 2010″, has been made available with the look of of recently updated UVM main web site . At 9:00pm on Wednesday, the UVM blog service blog.uvm.edu will be unavailable for a short time while it is upgraded to WordPress 3.0.1. This will add many new blog features and site improvements. A followup announcement will be posted once work is complete.

I’m working on the upgrade of this site to WordPress 3.0. Unfortunately, the upgrade from a rather-customize installed of WordPress MU is “special”, but the test server is… mostly… working at this point. There are still a number of broken plugins, though. Hopefully, we’ll get there next week.

This is just me, testing out the WordPress iPad app. The keyboard on this thing is much more usable than on an iPhone. The app is a bit strange in the UI department, but seems decently usable.

XML-RPC is now working. Blog owners can simply turn it on in Settings → Writing, and then go to Users → My Profile to generate a passcode for authentication. Woohoo!
Posted 1084 days ago. -
We’ve given up for now trying to get the XML-RPC interface to WordPress both to require SSL and to actually work consistently across third-party applications, and are switching to a mode of offering but not requiring SSL for XML-RPC, and ensuring that authentication is done with a non-NetID password. Users will be able to generate [...]

We have made available a new theme, “UVM Web 2008″, with the layout of The University of Vermont’s main web site. This theme shows static pages on the left-hand navigation menu and customizable widgets in the sidebar, provides the various departmental color variations of the UVM theme, and supports custom header images.

People often like to embed videos in blog posts. On multiuser sites like this, though, letting people insert arbitrary HTML code can be a security problem for other logged-in users, and so WordPress strips out embed codes. The alternative, though, is actually easier: simply copy and paste the URL to the video you want onto [...]

Allowing non-UVM people to create blog accounts without allowing them to also create blogs is just about ready. (WPMU ties the two together for some reason.) Test-user Sam confirms that it appears to be working as expected on the test server. The only remaining issue is preventing UVM people from creating accounts this way, when [...]

Two new themes have been made available: ChocoTheme and Motion.

The new blog.uvm.edu is starting to get migration requests. We’ve installed a couple plugins SAA people wanted, installed a theme I wanted, and fixed a couple issues. We still know about: user account creation is not yet working for non-UVM people. I have a fix, but it requires some testing before I can roll it out. There seems [...]
