Well, here we are at the TEA Guesthouse.  We’ll be spending five nights here; during the day we’ll be with Maya families.

Week One: Macal River Camp

We’re going to spend our first five days at the Macal River Camp at Chaa Creek, 20 minutes outside San Ignacio. Each of the three “local” faculty will spend a half day introducing the students to their topics. Additional activities will include:

  • a canoe trip up the Macal River to the Belize Botanic Gardens;
  • guided tours of the Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm and Natural History Museum;
  • a presentation on Chaa Creek’s efforts to promote sustainable tourism in Belize; and
  • daily guided bird walks (optional)

We’re excited about the new program, completely re-designed for 2012. The 2012 program features more field-based work and more service learning than previous semester.  Courses taught in 2012 are:

  • Development and Indigenous Peoples
  • Ridges to Reefs: Watershed Ecology in Belize
  • Wildlife Conservation and Communities
  • Intercultural Competence
  • Applications of Sustainable Development (service learning)
  • Advanced Applications of Sustainable Development (service learning)
