FTS News Spring 2011

Jon Kilik’s Visit

Posted: May 23rd, 2011 by hneroni

Jon Kilik is a much beloved and respected UVM alum.  One of our most successful alums to work in the film industry, Jon is an independent producer.  He has worked with such directors as Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch, Robert De Niro, Tim Robbins, Julian Schnabel, and Alejandro González Iñárritu.  Jon has been nominated many times at the academy awards and his films are widely respected as some of the best American and international independent films.  Generous with his time and dedicated to his alma mater, Jon returns often to UVM to talk to the students about his experiences.  Jon is also especially dedicated to the professor at UVM who inspired his career: Professor Emeritus Frank Manchel.  Though retired, Frank also generously donated his time and efforts to not only bring Jon to campus this spring but introduce Jon and run the Q and A.  Frank’s insightful questions and hearty endorsement and support of the Film and Television Studies students and major was a wonderful gift on top of Jon’s visit.  Jon spent all day with the students.  Below are just a few photos of the events.  We look forward to Jon’s return next spring when he will bring his latest project, The Hunger Games!

Jon always brings his latest project to share with the students, and this spring he brought Miral.

Additionally, Jon brought his film to Burlington’s Roxy Theatre.  Merril Jarvis, the owner of the Roxy, generously donated the theatre so that Jon could host a fundraiser for the Film and Teleivsion Studies students.  Thanks to all involved for a wonderful and meaningful visit!

Jon visited professor Deb Ellis‘s production class where he viewed and discussed student projects!  The students were thrilled with the opportunity to have Jon watch and talk about their work.  Additionally, Jon visited Sarah Nilsen’s senior seminar, Nature Documentaries, to discuss his previous film work and in particular the several documentaries he has produced including Berlin, the filming of a live concert in 2006 by Lou Reed and Last Party 2000, a film about the presidential campaign narrated by Philip Seymour Hoffman.

A small group of students had coffee with Jon.  They asked him many questions about how he started out and his experiences with actors, directors, and on individual films.
