Windows:
Recovering deleted files and folders from Zoo
This process will only work for files and folders which have been backed up by the server overnight. This means that files and folders which were created and deleted in the same day, cannot be recovered by a user.
The first step is to download and install a program called PuTTy.
PuTTy connects to UVM in a way that allows you to enter the necessary commands needed to restore your Zoo Folders and Files.
To get PuTTy, open a web browser and go to this address: www.uvm.edu/software
Already have PuTTy installed? Click here to skip this step.
You will be asked to login, use your UVM NetID and Password (the same information you use to login to your UVM email).
It should look something similar to the image below:

After logging in you will see a few links where you can select which platform you are using. You will want to click on the “Microsoft Windows” link.
You should now be at the UVM Software page for Windows. The software is listed alphabetically, you’ll want to scroll down to “PuTTy version 0.60”
Click on the “Download PuTTy now” link
After clicking the “Download PuTTy now” link, a dialog box similar to this one will appear. You will want to click “Save File”

When the download completes you should be able to start the installation by double-clicking on the link.
A dialog box similar to this one may appear, select “Run” to start the installation.

A dialog box will apear (similar to the one below). This is a message letting you know that this version of PuTTy has been customized for UVM.
Click “Yes” to continue with the install. It will only take a few moments to complete the installation.
The dialog boxes will disappear when the installation completes.
Now you are ready to run PuTTy. Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your computer screen.
In the search field type: “putty”
The PuTTy program should appear as one of the search results. Click on the PuTTy icon to launch the program.
After PuTTy opens, it will look like this (below). You’ll want to select the “zoo.uvm.edu” option.
Then click the “Open” button.
After clicking the “Open” button, a black box will appear. It will ask you to:
“login as: ENTER YOUR UVM USER NAME” then press Enter
“YOUR UVM USERNAME@zoo.uvm.edu’s password: ENTER YOUR PASSWORD HERE” then press Enter.
NOTE** when entering your password the cursor will not move, this is normal.
Once you have logged in we need to enter the “recover” command.
The “recover” command puts us in recovery mode. From here we can retrieve a recent backup containing your deleted or
or missing files/folders.
enter the “recover” command.
then press Enter
Your screen should look similar to the image below.
Now we are ready to change the date to a backup point from before your files were accidentally deleted or corrupted.
To change the date you use the “changetime” command.
In this example we are changing the time to yesterday’s backup:
“changetime yesterday”
Other Examples:
If you need to choose a backup from a later date, you could also use:
“changetime 02/13/2010”
or
“changetime last thursday”
After changing the time we need to get a list of all the available files and folders from that particular backup point.
To do this we use the “ls” (LS)* command. Type the “ls” command, then press Enter.

As you can see in the image above, there are two items:
“Class work Fall 2010” and “who to assign things to.doc”
Now its time to select the files and/or folders we wish to mark for recovery.
We mark files and folders using the “add” command.
In this example we are recovering our “Class work Fall 2010″ folder.
Retrieve the backup of an entire folder example:
add “Class work Fall 2010″
Then press Enter.
**NOTE: You MUST use quotations around the filename of folder if it contains _spaces_ or CAPS
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Retrieve the backup of a file within a folder example:
If I wanted to retrieve a specific file from my “Class work Fall 2010” folder I would need to use the “cd” command.
The “cd” command changes the directory to a specific folder. This allows us to see what files are available within any particular folder.
Example:
cd “Class work Fall 2010”
Then press Enter
______________________________________________________________________________________
After changing the directory to “Class work Fall 2010” we need to use the “dir” command to see what files are inside. You can
then go ahead and “add” any files within this directory using the same “add” command listed above.
**NOTE: You MUST use quotations around the filename of folder if it contains _spaces_ or CAPS
After your file(s) have been marked for recovery you are now ready to enter the “recover” command to initiate the recovery process.
Type: “recover”
then press Enter (see image below).
The final step is to use the “exit” command. The files are not restored to your Zoo space until you enter the “exit” command.
Type: “exit”
then press Enter.
Login to your zoo space to make sure that the files were successfully recovered.
