Installing Free Office 365 for Students, Faculty, and Staff: Windows

The University of Vermont Enrollment for Education Solutions with Microsoft now offers all current UVM students up to five free licenses of Microsoft Office on PC/Mac as well as mobile phone and tablet platforms as part of the Student Advantage Program, and one license to current faculty and staff. These licenses will work for as long as you have a current student, faculty, or staff affiliation with the University.

This is a tutorial for install Office 365 on a PC:

1. Open a web browser and go to http://go.uvm.edu/getoffice.  You will need to log into this page using your NetID and password associated with your UVM account.

NOTE: there are two versions of Office 365, 32bit and 64bit. Choose the correct program type for your system type UNLESS you know that you have software that will only work with the standard 32 bit version of Office. The 32 bit version works on ANY system type, and should be selected if you are not sure whether there may be compatibility issues with your applications.

2. From here you can see which programs you’ll be downloading, as well as how many licences you have left to install.  You can install Office by clicking on the Install button at the bottom of the page.

3. Find the location where you downloaded the file setup.exe, and double click on it to run it.

NOTE: a “User Account Control” window may appear, click “Yes” on this window to continue with the installation.

4. Now Office 356 should begin to install (you may be prompted with a short informative video and a list of features before the installation begins).

5. Once it finishes installing, you should ensure that you are logged in to your UVM Microsoft Account.  To do this, open up any Office program (such as Word or PowerPoint) and see if your name and UVM email address are listed in the top right corner of the window.

6. If you do not see that you are logged in, click on the File button in the top left corner of the window.

7. From here, click on the  Account button on the left menu.

8. On the Account page, you should see an option to Sign in or Switch users.  Click on this link and a new window should appear.

9. The new window should prompt you to sign into your Microsoft Account.  You will need to log in using your netID@uvm.edu address and the password associated with your UVM account.

10.  Ensure that you have successfully logged in by confirming your name and email address appear in the top right corner of your Office 365 programs.  You should only need to log in once, and it should be remembered in all Office programs you installed.

And that’s it!  You have successfully installed Office 365 onto your PC.

Removing Office 365

All students are offered five free licenses of Office 365, so there may be a time when you need to deactivate a license if you are trying to install Office on too many devices.

If you are unsure of how many licenses you have used or how many you have left, you can go to http://go.uvm.edu/getoffice to get a detailed description of when, where, and how many licenses you have activated.

Here are instructions on how to completely remove Office 365 from your PC:

1. Open a web browser to http://go.uvm.edu/getoffice to deactivate Office 365 from your PC (there should be a Deactivate link next to your computer’s name here).

2. You can then close the web browser and go into your Control Panel and click on Uninstall a Program.

3. From here, find Office 365 and click Uninstall.

NOTE: If you deactivate Office but DO NOT uninstall it from you machine, you will be prompted to activate it again the next time you use an Office 365 program.  If you decide to activate it through that program, the next time you log into http://go.uvm.edu/getoffice you will see that it has been activated again.

Now you have successfully removed Office 365 from you machine, and you are able to install Office 356 on an additional device.
