Move Local Folders and Mail to Exchange

The University of Vermont has recently moved its email and calendaring services to Microsoft Exchange. The following walkthrough will show you how to move Thunderbird “Local Folders” to the Exchange server. Once you’ve moved these local folders to the server, you’ll be able to access them from all of your Exchange connected devices and clients.

  1. Open Thunderbird. Go to the “Tools” menu and select “Account Settings”
  2. From the “Account Settings” window, click on “Server Settings” in the left column. Then click the “Advanced” button under the “Server Settings” area.
  3. Verify that “Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages” is checked. Then click “OK” to continue.
  4. Click “OK” in the “Account Settings” window to close it. Quit Thunderbird and then relaunch it.
  5. Locate the “Local Folders” area in your Folder list.
  6. In this example we have a “Budgets” folder, with subfolders “2013”, “2014”, “2015”. You will need to create this same folder hierarchy within your UVM account.
  7. Right-click on your UVM account. From the list of options that appear, select “New Folder“.
  8. Create the top-level folder. In this example, our top-level folder is “Budgets” .
  9. Now create the subfolders within the “Budgets” folder. Right-click on the “Budgets” folder and select “New Subfolder“.
  10. Create and label all appropriate subfolders. In this example, we’re creating the “2013”, “2014”, and “2015” subfolders. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until this has been completed.
  11. Confirm that the folder hierarchy you just created matches your Local Folders.
  12. The final step is to move the messages from each local subfolder and move them to corresponding subfolders you’ve created within your UVM account.
  13. That’s it. Your Local Folders and mail has been moved to the Exchange server. You can verify this by visiting Outlook for Web You should see the “Budgets” folder along with the subfolders you’ve created. These will now be accessible from all of your Exchange connected devices and clients.
