Installing and Setting Up Thunderbird: Windows

Step-by-step instructions on how to download, install, and set-up Thunderbird for Windows software.

Installing Thunderbird

  • Go to: www.uvm.edu/software
  • You may be asked to enter your UVM NetID and password (same login information that is used for your UVM email).
  • After logging in you will be asked to select your platform. Select Microsoft Windows.
  • This will bring you to the “Software Download Archive” page, where you can scroll down to Thunderbird and click “Download Thunderbird Now”.
  • After a few seconds, you will be brought to Thunderbird’s site in order to download it. If not, click on the alternative link that they provide.
  • Next, click on “Free Download”. The Thunderbird Setup will pop up in the bottom left corner, which you can click on once it is done downloading.

  • After clicking on the setup, you will be brought to the Setup Wizard. Hit “Next” to continue.

  • Make sure that the Standard setup type is selected. Then hit “Next”.

  • Next you will be asked where to install the program, but you should leave this setting as be. Now you can hit “Install”.

  • After hitting Install, this screen will show up. To finish the setup and to launch Thunderbird, hit the “Finish” button.

Adding UVM Email

  • Once Thunderbird is installed and launches, you will be able to add your email account.
  • A screen will pop up asking if you would like to create a new email. Do not enter anything, and hit the “Skip this and use my existing email” button.

  • Next the Mail Account Setup box will appear. This is where you enter your UVM Email login information (NetID and password). It also asks for a name, this is the name that the recipients of your emails will see. Hit the “Continue” button.

  • Next a box similar to this will appear. Do not change any of the configuration settings. Hit the “Done” button. You should now be able to access your UVM Email through Thunderbird!
