How to Remove Symantec (PGP) Encryption: Windows 10

Symantec (PGP) is an encryption service that was previously used by the University of Vermont prior to its use of Bitlocker and FileVault to protect data. This article shows how to decrypt Symantec-encrypted machines and uninstall the software.

Removing Symantec (PGP) Desktop Encryption

Prior to removing Symantec/PGP, the encrypted volumes on the computer must be decrypted.

Decrypting a volume

First, open the Symantec Encryption Desktop program.

1. Click the System Tray menu pop-up

2. Right-click the Symantec Desktop Encryption icon

3. From the pop-up menu, select Open Symantec Encryption Desktop

4. Select the disk to decrypt and select decrypt in the top right corner of the program.

Decryption will likely take a few hours, varying depending on how large the volume is.

Uninstall Symantec Encryption Desktop

Now Symantec Encryption Desktop can be uninstalled.

1. Open the Start Menu

2. Select Settings as the little gear icon in the bottom left

3. Select “System” to get to the applications.

4. Go to “Apps & Features”

5. Scroll to Symantec and select it. When it is selected it will give the option to “Uninstall”. Select this and it will ask for verification to remove the software. Select “Yes”

6. After uninstallation, reboot the machine to ensure that the removal of Symantec is complete.
