Enrolling your Smart Phone in Duo Mobile

What is MFA?

Multi-factor authentication is a paradigm that requires two separate pieces of information (“factors”) in order to verify a user’s identity. A factor is information that a user knows (password, PIN, etc.), has (id card, smart card, etc.), or is (aka “biometrics” i.e. fingerprint, hand scan, etc). Requiring an additional factor presents an additional challenge to a malicious user.

What is Duo Security?

Duo Security is a third-party service that the University of Vermont has contracted in order to provide multi-factor services to the campus. Duo Security enables UVM affiliates to integrate mobile phones, mobile devices, landlines, and other technologies as additional authentication factors.

Setup Duo Security on your Smart phone

Though several options are available, we’ve found that most users choose to enroll their mobile phone in the Duo system. This allows your phone to be used as a second factor for verifying logins to data sensitive UVM services. The app is free and there is no telephony charge to you when using the Duo app.

  1. If you haven’t already done so, connect your smart phone to the UVM wireless network.

  2. Open a web browser on your computer and navigate to https://account.uvm.edu/multifactor. You may be asked to enter your UVM NetID and password.
    1. Click the “Activate/Manage Duo Security” button.

    2. Click the “Add Phone” button.

    3. Enter your phone number (with area code), a description of your phone, and select the appropriate platform. Then click the “Add Phone” button.

  3. You’ll receive two sms text messages. The first message will ask if you’d like to install Duo. (If you’ve already installed the Duo Mobile app, skip to Step 4)
    1. If you have not already installed Duo you can click this link to launch your App Store and install the app.

    2. Once the App Store has launch, click the “Get” button to download and install the Duo Mobile app.

  4. Once you’ve installed the Duo mobile app, open the second sms text message your received. This message provides a link which will activate your Duo mobile app for use with your UVM account.
    1. Click the link to activate your Duo mobile app.

    2. Your phone may ask for your permission to open the Duo mobile app. If prompted, tap the “Open” button.

  5. Your activated Duo mobile app will look similar to this:

  6. Thats it! You’ve successfully setup Duo mobile!
