Adding a New Administrator on AD-Joined Machines

This article outlines the steps to grant a user administrator rights for a CAMPUS domain-joined machine. It should be noted that there are risks associated with administrator privileges, and local administrator rights should only be granted to trusted users who understand those risks. A netID-tech account is required to add a new administrator. IT professionals are provisioned with NetID-tech accounts, which allow them to login to CAMPUS domain-joined machines with local administrator rights to the computer. These instructions are based on the process for adding an administrator in Windows 10.

  1. Right-click on “This PC” in File Explorer (Computer in Windows 7), and select “Manage” to open the Computer Management menu. This can be done from any account on the computer, but will be easiest from an account that already has administrator privileges (NetID-tech or local administrator).    ManagePC
  2. In the Computer Management menu, expand the “Local Users and Groups” item and select “Groups”. CompGroups
  3. From the list of groups, right-click “Administrators” and select “Add to Group …” to bring up the Administrators Properties window.AdministratorsGroup
  4. Click on the “Add” button in the bottom left of the Administrators Properties window. AddAdmin
  5. A window will pop up asking for network credentials, enter the netID-tech and password. TechAccount
  6. In the next window, enter the netID of the user being granted administrator privileges, and click “OK”. If entered correctly, the window will close and the user will be listed with the other Administrators. If done incorrectly, or if there are multiple options found, a list of options will be presented, from which the correct user can be selected. AdminnetID
  7. Sign out of the machine, and have the user sign into their CAMPUS account. They will now have administrator privileges on that machine.
