Today’s Activities:

  • Backups:
    • Stornode4’s disk still full…
      8TB stage been running for 18 hours (as of 06:30)
      Should complete in about 3-4 hours more.
    • Started stages to clean off Vault tapes that were stolen
      by the UVM pool in October.
    • DISK and FSGen3 clones continue to run.
      They two have about 81TB left between them.
      I have 83 Vault tapes left… gonna be close!
    • SN2, ST1, 1310119697 – multiple label reads failed.
      ITDT dump taken and provided to Qualstar.
      Qualstar RMA 51204 issued – Bad Read Head.
    • Cleaned up defunct groups and clients, again.
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • No updates require human intervention.
    • rsyslogd seems to be leaking memory. (ps auux shows lots of swap)
      Do I determine the cause and fix it, or just restart it weekly?

Today’s Activities:

  • Backups:
    • Tape Vaulting: 40 went, zero returned.
    • Qualstar RMA 51196: Replaced 1310209179 with 1310136359.
    • Added seventy (70) new tapes to the UVM pool.
    • Repaired retention times of fifteen SSIDs on six tapes.
    • Started DISK and FSGen3 clones – should use up the 90 Vault
      tapes I have available.
    • Started emergency (manual) staging of 8TB from SN4 disk.
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • Two updates require human intervention:
      • Name issue with OSP – asking for clarification.
      • New CE student is an employee – missing ID info
      • Both are now fixed and set to work tonight.

26. November 2018: Montag

Today’s Activities:

  • Backups:
    • Tape Vaulting: 40 went and 38 returned.
    • Deposited forty (40) new tapes and put them in the UVM pool.
    • SR 12488055
      • Downloaded and tested a “save fix”.
      • Manual use test passes.
      • Use it as the system “save” command for 24 hours.
    • Qualstar RMA 51196: No drive… asking for tracking number.
      Drive was delivered to the mailroom at 9:49am today.
    • Stealing 16 tapes from other pools to augment the UVM pool.
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • One update requires human intervention.
      A Student Employee – cannot find matching student.
      Asked Payroll to assist with finding the Student ID Number.
      A Visiting Ph.D … Payroll is converting to “TMP”.
    • script updated to deal with OC that has multiple attributes
      now, but did not years ago when this script was written.

  • Backups:
    • SN4’s disks are full – need more tapes.
    • Deposited sixty (60) new tapes and put them in the UVM pool.

Today’s Activities:

  • Backups:
    • Continuing the forced reclamation of Vault tapes.
      Reclaimed five tapes for the vaults.
    • stornode2, st0, 1310209179 – tape 190037L4 stuck.
    • Repaired long retention time on 72 save sets across 7 tapes.
    • Reran backup of failed IPv6 (RHEL6) client – it worked
      this time — gamma rays…
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • One update requires human intervention.
      Asking Registrar to verify this is not a duplicate.
      Registrar responds that this is probably a duplicate
      awaiting final verification.
      Looks like verification has been made – update tonight.
    • aspn vpn group script updated for email reporting.

19. November 2018: Montag

Today’s Activities:

  • Backups:
    • Backup Maintenance Day.
      • Bay 32 intrusion error cleared on XLS.
      • Cleaning up duplicates on bujbod systems
        was problematic as something was wrong
        with a kernel install that was not
        recognized and removed as a duplicate and
        therefore caused kernel panics at reboot.
    • Starting to reclaim (by force) vault tapes from the UVM pool.
    • Tape Vault Run: 40 went, 18 returned.
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • One update requires human intervention. Found and fixed.

Today’s Activities:

  • Backups:
    • Rebuilt the NetWorker test server as RHEL6.10
    • Received 80 of the 250 ordered tapes.
      Gave 40 of them to the UVM pool.
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • Put Feature: migrateRole into production.
    • No updates require human intervention.
  • General:
    • Registration: Yup, it worked.
    • SecurID closeout: Start creating aspn_management script.

  • Backups:
    • Performed weekly clone post-processing.
    • Two windows clients failed to backup.
    • NW9 upgrade planning.
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • No updates require human intervention.
    • Closed down the firewall on the primary LDAP server.
  • General:
    • Registration: Sophomores registered with ease.

  • Backups:
    • DISK clones completed at 04:13 (14,548.4 GB)
    • Replaced tape drive 1310021951 with 1310056909.
      First calibration attempt failed due to
      “Load B001S50G(CAL)–>B001T02F, Carrier/drive communication faile (-304), Initiator: LIM, Notification Count: 1”
      Second calibration attempt worked…
    • FSGen3 clones completed at 21:18 (22,333.2 GB)
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • Yesterday’s update needing human touch still there.
      HR responds that that one is the surviving spouse of
      a deceased retiree – remove it.
    • Released new feature “migrateRoles” to development branch.
  • General:
    • Registration – Juniors, DB server peaked at X% cpu.
    • SSL – requested a certificate for the library.

Today’s Activities:

  • Backups:
    • Staging takes too long, cannot keep volumes clear.
    • One client still failing as admins decide who can reboot.
    • Tape Vault: 40 went and 35 returned.
  • LDAP/Accounts:
    • One update requires human intervention. Emailed RETIREE feed
      for clarity.
    • Developing (feat.Move-SOR) command to move SOR data between
      LDAP entries. Passes individual testing — needs development
      system level test.
    • Developing the replicant with exattrs in the syncrepl definition
      nuke-and-repave cheese.ldif generator.
  • General:
    • Registration — it ran, no problems.
    • samba server issue — looked at it, Brian showed up and fixed it.
