PAID Summer position @ Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Lav

Job position:
Seeking a highly motivated undergraduate research technician to assist with an aquatic research project focused on migration behavior of invertebrates and fish in Lake Ontario. The full-time summer position will be based out of the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory with occasional 2-3 week sampling trips in May and July, working in close collaboration with researchers from USGS and Cornell University. Housing will be provided during field trips. Field work could include sampling from small and large research vessels, although no previous boating experience is required. Responsibilities include assisting with zooplankton and mysid sample collection, hydroacoustics, gillnetting, water filtering, recording data on field sheets, measuring specimens under a microscope, and data organization. The student will be trained in both field and lab methods for collecting, identifying, and analyzing biological data, gaining exposure to many different methods used in limnological and fisheries research. A desire to learn invertebrate taxonomy and work safely on boats is preferred. We anticipate the position being 50% field work and 50% lab work.
Opportunities to continue work into the fall semester (part-time) and/or develop an independent research project that ties in to the larger project goals will be available for motivated students.

Qualifications:
• Able to travel for 2-3 weeks at a time to do field work on Lake Ontario in May and July.
• Willing to work aboard small and large research vessels to collect biological
• Excellent data organization skills, experience entering data in excel spreadsheets
• Able to work at night
• Student must be able to lift up to 20 kg and work full days outside when field sampling.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with invertebrate taxonomy, limnology, fisheries research
• Experience working aboard boats to collect scientific data
• Comfortable working behind a microscope to ID/measure organisms
