Here is an internship that may be of interest to some of you! Apply by Friday, April 6th. –Anna

Internship Title: Sugar Maple Propagation Intern

Internship Site: Aiken lab (Spear Street, Burlington, VT) and Vallee Farm (Georgia, VT)

Description: Create and execute a plan for propagating 2,500 Sugar Maple seedlings to be planted in the fall of 2019. These seeds have been collected from trees that all test over 5% sugar. The student will be responsible for developing and implementing a plan for propagating seedlings in the Aiken lab on Speer street, including mixing growing media, developing watering and handling protocols, and evaluating seedling quality and development. In fall of 2019 they will be planted in a high fence field to avoid deer predation. The intern will work with graduate student Peter Clark to come up with different experiments to find the best way to propagate and plant Sugar Maple seedlings in former agricultural fields. The goal of the internship is to produce strong, healthy seedlings that will be able to survive to maturity. They will then be tapped and harvested for their sap (20-30 years down the road). If the intern has interest they are welcome to be further involved in the sugaring business, and our forestry plans. More information on our farm can be found at our website www.valleemaple.com.
