Job Responsibilities
The Lake Champlain Basin Program and New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) are seeking part-time boat launch stewards to deliver interpretive invasive species spread prevention messages to boaters on Lake Champlain during the summer of 2018 and to inspect and decontaminate vessels as appropriate.
Boat Launch Stewards will interact with the public and gather lake-user information on mobile tablets while greeting visitors to Lake Champlain. Their primary duty will be to familiarize the public with aquatic invasive species information. Some boat launch stewards will be trained to conduct watercraft inspections and hot water high-pressure decontaminations as necessary. This will include set up, operation, and maintenance of the decontamination units. Stewards will be requested to work eight-hour days for approximately thirty-two hours per week at select boat launches around Lake Champlain from Memorial Day through Labor Day; weekend work is required. Time off by prior arrangement can be accommodated. Mandatory training will take place the week of May 14th, 2018 for one day in Vermont and the week of May 21st for three days at the LCBP office in Grand Isle, Vermont and at the Paul Smith’s College Adirondack Watershed Institute in Paul Smiths, New York. We will attempt to locate stewards at suitable public launch sites within a reasonable distance from their place of residence, but some travel should be expected.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will be well organized and have excellent communication skills, experience speaking with the public, demonstrated data collection and recording, familiarity with invasive species, and field work experience. Candidates will be comfortable working in the field and have the physical capability to inspect trailered watercraft. Experience operating watercraft and /or motorized equipment and basic familiarity with boaters, anglers, and recreational equipment will be useful. Highly motivated individuals with familiarity with aquatic invasive species and/or water recreation experience are encouraged to apply. Driver’s license required.
