<span style="text-decoration: underline"><br />
Essential Duties and Responsibilities</span><br />
This position will assist the Transportation Program Manager in planning and implementing Vital Communities’ work within the topics of transportation and energy. This includes supporting the day-to-day operations of our commuting outreach program (“Smart Commute Upper Valley”), general promotional and outreach activities, and assisting with the Vermont Transportation Stakeholders Network.</p>
<p>Smart Commute:<br />
• Consult major regional employers on programs to lower the impacts of commuting and mid-day transportation needs<br />
• Work with manager to expand program to 50 Upper Valley workplaces<br />
• Program and analyze transportation surveys<br />
• Measure and promote progress toward reducing vehicle fuel use in the Upper Valley<br />
• Play an active role within the Transportation Team in developing outreach and communications materials and plans<br />
• Assist with event planning and execution<br />
• Other administrative tasks as necessary</p>
<p>Vermont Transportation Stakeholders Network:<br />
• Assist with all aspects of the Vermont Transportation Stakeholders Network, a statewide association of transportation professionals. Duties include logistics for 3-4 major gatherings per year, program planning, and outreach to Network members<br />
• Develop a website to share case studies, best practices, and commuter data from across Vermont<br />
• Assist with creating, administering, and collating surveys and other evaluative materials</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline">Minimum expectations/qualifications</span>:<br />
• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in public policy, environmental studies, geography, communications, or another applicable field<br />
• Passion for efficient transportation, energy, and land use<br />
• A basic understanding of PC computing, a willingness to try simple troubleshooting<br />
• Attention to detail; efficient and effective organization skills<br />
• A self-directed individual who is willing to ask questions and wants to be successful in even the smallest task.<br />
• An optimistic, outgoing, and positive presence when interacting with the public on VC’s behalf<br />

<p>Several prominent sports teams and not-for-profit organizations have a story to tell about why they got involved with environmental concerns at venues and the positive changes they have experienced when they track and measure these reduction.  Learn about the challenges they faced during their initial assessments about understanding the A, B, C?s of environmental issues.  Learn how the industry impacts our environment through simple things like our land, water and air.  Learn about how these facilities have made enhancements in managing waste, conserving water, conserving energy, using carbon offsets.  These organizations will share their plans to succeed before taking on these environmental challenges. Speakers will share their plans for the future environmental issues.  Finally, the speakers their experience in reducing food waste and the benefits of the Food Recovery Challenge to reduce their environmental footprint, reduce production of greenhouse gases, reduce, reuse, recycle and RETHINK.  Speakers will give an overview of their goals and share their lessons learned as a result of taking on the environmental challenge to reduce their environmental footprint:</p>

<li>these green initiatives were done voluntarily (not because of mandates)</li>
<li>environmental impact of the industry on our resources</li>
<li>determine where do I start?</li>
<li>what can be included in assessing our environmental concerns</li>
<li>how to measure reduction of ghg?s (greenhouse gases)</li>
<li>how green initiatives influence sponsorship</li>
<li>how green initiatives raise awareness of players and fans</li>

</span></b><b><span style="text-decoration: underline">Moderator:</span></b><br />
<b><span style="text-decoration: underline">Steve Fishman</span></b>: Steve Fishman is a Waste Management Specialist working at the US Environmental Protection Agency. He has worked in the Solid Waste industry for over 25 years, Special Waste Representative for Laidlaw Waste, Technical Sales Manager for CETCO and Business Manager for Superior Hazardous Waste Group. Steve has a B.A. degree from UMKC, was a Certified Hazardous Manager, Past President of the Missouri Recycling Association and Past Chair of the local chapter of the Air and Waste Management Association.</p>
<p><b><span style="text-decoration: underline">Speaker(s):</span></b></p>
<p><b><span style="text-decoration: underline">Syd Mandelbaum:</span></b><b> </b> A scientist working to reduce poverty and hunger. After working for 20 years for genetics, DNA and anti-cancer think tanks, Syd left the hard sciences to form Rock and Wrap It Up! an anti-poverty charity. As a greening, anti-poverty think tank, RWU has launched 6 asset recovery programs which have fed over one billion who hunger. Syd is currently working with the USDA and the EPA to reduce hunger through food recovery. Syd is also consulting with Congress to open up federal agencies and military bases for asset recovery.</p>
<p><b><span style="text-decoration: underline">Joe Abernathy</span></b><b><span style="text-decoration: underline">:</span></b>  Currently the Vice-President of Stadium Operations for the St. Louis Cardinals.  Joe is responsible for all day-to-day building operations and game-day event management activities at Busch Stadium, including ushering, guest services, security, medical services, maintenance, clean up, grounds keeping, and parking.  Joe was a member of the design team and was also responsible for the commissioning and start-up of the new Busch Stadium for the 2006 season.  Joe is currently the Past-President of the Board of Directors of the Stadium Managers Association.  Joe also serves on the Stadium Operations Advisory Committee for Major League Baseball and is Co-Chairman of the Sustainable Operations sub-committee.  Joe is also on the Board of Directors for the Green Sports Alliance.  In these roles, he is spearheading the benchmarking of sustainable operations metrics for all MLB facilities.</p>
<p><b><span style="text-decoration: underline">Brandon Hamilton:</span></b><b> </b> Currently the Director of Facilities for Kansas City Chiefs, Inc.  Brandon is responsible for facility management at the Stadium and Training Facility, and management of the engineering, grounds keeping, maintenance, and carpentry departments.  Brandon is the Committee Chair for the Chiefs Green Initiative Committee and has a significant role in the recently announced environmental stewardship program for the Chiefs, ?Extra Yard for the Environment?.  Brandon is a member of the Green Sports Alliance and the International Association of Venue Managers.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>VSA Vermont presents BOOMVT, a drum festival to raise awareness about people with disabilities in the arts.</strong></p>
<p><strong> Sunday, June 2, 2013 at</strong><br />
<strong>City Hall Park in Burlington, Vermont</strong></p>
<p>BOOMVT features music performances by dynamic local drum ensembles including members from Burlington Taiko, Sambatucada, Jeh Kulu, Gahu at St. Michael&#8217;s College, and many others. Drummers with disabilities led by Bruce McKenzie and Bennicent Agbodzie will take center stage at the heart of the festival.<br />
The stage for BOOMVT is generously donated by the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival.<br />
All who attend are welcome to make or bring drumming instruments of their own design and join in, with or without preparation, during a final, unifying crescendo.</p>
<p>We are looking for volunteers to join the rhythm with us and help VSA Vermont use the magic of the arts to engage the capabilities and enhance the confidence of children and adults with disabilities.</p>
<p><strong>Volunteers are needed on Sunday, June 2,</strong> for help with welcoming drummers and festival attendees, handing out information at our VSA Vermont table, setting up and cleaning up before and after the event, distributing merchandise for sale, and our social media campaign.<br />

<p>The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that acts as a catalyst to advance energy efficiency policies, programs, technologies, investments, and behaviors. ACEEE seeks an intern for its communications department.<br />
This internship begins Summer 2013 with the possibility of extending into the fall semester and it is based in Washington, D.C. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We do not accept calls about our internships.</p>
<p><strong>Communications Intern</strong> &#8211; Paid</p>
<p>Position Description:</p>
<p>ACEEE seeks a part-time intern to assist with communications for the organization. The internship will be an excellent opportunity for those interested in communications at a nonprofit organization with a focus on energy and environmental issues. The accepted candidate will receive some training on public relations web-based tools as necessary.</p>
<p>Duties and Responsibilities:</p>
<ul>
<li>Maintain a database of news articles;</li>
<li>Press-based research as needed;</li>
<li>Create media lists;</li>
<li>Assist Communications Associate with publication and outreach duties;</li>
<li>Research social media tools; and</li>
<li>Log data in ACEEE contact database.</li>
</ul>
<p>Skills/Qualifications:</p>
<ul>
<li>Possess or are working towards a Bachelor&#8217;s or Master&#8217;s degree in a related field;</li>
<li>Interest in energy and environmental issues strongly preferred;</li>
<li>Experience with PR tools such as Constant Contact and Vocus preferred;</li>
<li>Excellent written and oral communication skills required; and</li>
<li>Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple assignments (as needed), work efficiently, and meet deadlines.</li>
</ul>
<p>Timing: Local applicants preferred as this internship will begin in the summer 2013 with the possibility of extending into the fall semester. The internship will require a time commitment of 20 hours/week.</p>

Mini-grants, up to <b>$1000</b> for each project, are available to student-run organizations at colleges and universities in New England. Student groups at under-resourced institutions (URIs), minority-serving institutions (MSIs), and ACUPCC signatory institutions are strong encouraged to apply!</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline">Possible grant activities include:</span></p>

<li>A project that will promote and/or improve sustainability efforts on campus</li>
<li>Guest speakers series on sustainability/climate issues</li>
<li>Visit or host workshop with other campuses to replicate and implement successful campus sustainability practices/models</li>

<p>QUALIFICATIONS<br />

• Has a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation<br />
• Has access to private work space<br />
• Training or field experience in natural sciences, environmental education or a related field<br />
• Ability to work independently and while supervising others<br />
• Excellent people skills; outgoing and tactful; positive and collaborative attitude<br />
• Well organized work style and capable of multi‐tasking<br />
• Ability to do light trail work and use hand tools<br />
• Ability to coordinate adult and youth volunteers<br />
• Capable of designing and leading interpretive programs for adult and youth<br />
audiences<br />
• Familiarity with Vermont flora and fauna; understanding of basic ecology; plant<br />
identification skills<br />
• Computer literate, working knowledge of Microsoft programs and email</p>
<p>COMPENSATION<br />
$12 per hour; this position does not offer additional benefits.</p>
