YMCA Camp Orkila is situated on the north side of Orcas Island – part of the San Juan Islands in the Salish Sea – and is accessible by ferry from Anacortes, 75 miles north of Seattle. Orkila offers over 285 acres of forest, grassland, marine and fresh water ecosystems as well as a small salmon hatchery, a marine education center, many challenge course elements (including our new 1000 foot zip-line) and a working organic garden.
Our instructors work 5 days a week split between our Outdoor Environmental Education Program and our weekend camping and retreat programs hosting parent/child groups.
As an instructor at Camp Orkila, your responsibilities will include teaching courses in forest and marine ecology and other earth sciences, facilitating our high- and low-ropes challenge courses and leading team-building initiatives for visiting 5th-8th grade students. Instructors can also expect to spend some evenings during the week facilitating evening programs. In addition to these duties, staff also work together to assist with many other camp operations, including cleaning, kitchen work, and maintenance projects.
Salary: $230-$250(DOE)/week + room/board in nice staff housing.
Our season begins with a comprehensive staff training. Employment, including training, is March 17th through June 16th, 2014 and is a full-time, seasonal position.
