Kids bike giveaway, Mercy Winter/Summer events, & Working Bridges Resources of the Month

BO·NAN·ZA
 noun

1.) a situation or event that creates a sudden increase in wealth, good fortune, or profits, or

2.) a large amount of something desirable

Our friends at RISPnet and United Way Working Bridges have shared flyers (see below) about a bunch of community events that are happening this winter and spring.  The most exciting is a kids bike giveaway, Bike Bonanza, that is being organized by Old Spokes Home (OSP) for low income Vermonters.

You should act quickly to preregister (click here) before the deadline of December 12th because OSP can only afford to giveaway 140 bikes.

In addition, the First Congregational Church UCC of Burlington continues to offer free legal clinics, and Mercy Connections is offering a range of training and education events — including a free citizenship preparation class.

Want another way to avoid the flu?  Wash your hands regularly!  Click on this link for some free, downloadable posters to encourage everyone to wash their hands as well as a few hand washing infographics — such as the percentage men (38%) and women (68%) the World Health Organization says regularly wash their hands.

Seeking Thanksgiving Hosts for International Students

Did you hear about a unique opportunity to host UVM International students during Thanksgiving?  Here is a brief overview by Office of International Education staff member Emma Swift that was included in Staffline:

The Office of International Education (OIE) is coordinating a program to help our international students celebrate Thanksgiving with UVM families. Interested faculty and staff members will open their homes to 2-3 international students who will join your Thanksgiving celebration. This is a special opportunity for UVM’s international students to experience US culture outside of the campus bubble through seeing how this holiday is celebrated. If you and your family are interested in participating, please learn more and fill out a brief application by October 29th.

My Brother’s Keeper: An Obama-inspired College Financing Workshop @ Champlain College

Do you have family/friends with college-aged children who are curious about  applying to (and paying for!) college?  Are you concerned about economic barriers?  Are you wondering about how to support students who are refugees, immigrants, youth of color, or first generation college attendees so that they can successfully and confidently access higher education?

If your answer is “Yes!,” then you should sign-up for this Barack Obama inspired initiative that Burlington is now hosting for it’s second year in a row.  Please see the flyer and press release below, and be sure to register for the FREE event in advance by clicking on this link.

The event will be held on Friday, November 3rd from 3pm-6pm in the Creative Media Building at Champlain College (375 Maple Street).
