Peer Mentors Making a Difference

Mehanna HeadshotMeet Mehanna Borostyan, a junior studying Political Science & Global Studies and a Senior Career Peer Mentor at The Hub. Mehanna was an office assistant in the Career Center as a first-year student, where she learned about the peer mentor opportunity through natural networking. She clearly recalls one conversation with staff member Jill Hoppenjans who encouraged her to consider the opportunity. The idea of growing into a leadership role and helping her peers by sharing her own experiences was appealing and she applied.

Last year as a Peer Mentor, Mehanna enjoyed meeting students at The Hub who she might not have otherwise met. “I would see them around campus and hear how they’d had success with the resources I told them about.” She returns this fall because she loves helping other students find opportunities. And, she is excited to help lead the expanded team this year by “allowing others to shadow me and learn the way I did.”

In addition to expanding their team, The Hub has also expanded their hours this year and is really focusing on peers helping peers. “It’s just like sitting down with a friend who has access to information you might not have.  We’re trained to help you, but we’re also in the thick of it too, and can relate.”

Mehanna’s wisdom to you: “You’re not alone, even if you feel behind in your career prep… Just dropping by The Hub is a step in the right direction!”
