Make the most of your winter break by job shadowing

C with bubbles of people in networks

Job shadowing is a great way to get an inside look at an organization, and gives you the chance to connect with a UVM alum who can show you around. The UVM Job Shadowing Program has over 90 different job shadowing sites are available in a variety of different fields and locations, and now is the time to apply for a shadowing match. You could get a behind-the-scenes experience with a:

  • Senior Account Executive at Twitter in New York City
  • Program Services Director at the Department of Corrections in Williston, Vermont
  • Director of Science Programs at the Ecological Society of America in Washington DC
  • Regional Farm-to-School Lead at the US Department of Agriculture in Boston, MA

These alumni can tell you about their own paths from UVM to their current roles, introduce you to their colleagues, and help you think about ways to break into the field.

One student who shadowed in 2014 had this to say about his experience:

“My host [the Director of Business Transformation at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey] not only had activities prepared, he also went above and beyond and showed me the facility, what his day to day routine consists of, as well as problem solving. It was an awesome experience that I would definitely recommend, and would love to do again.”

Another student explained that she “attended lots of meetings, all of them very interesting. I liked that my shadowing host [Deputy Commissioner at the NY Department of Transportation] didn’t change his daily plans for me, but incorporated me in his daily routine instead. This helped me really see how working at the NYCDOT feels like.”
