potash brook

Potash brook watershed is a valuable and fragile ecosystem.  Human development and farming in a watershed will load the water sources nearby with excess nutrients, which in turn will change the ecology of the lake.  Having a healthy watershed will help add healthy inputs for aquatic species.  These species can be used both for recreational and commercial fishing.  Having a heavily disturbed watershed with inputs from local development can contribute to nutrient loading and unnatural algae growth which can disrupt oxygen availability to the local species.  Having an unhealthy watershed wont introduce invasive species but in this instance provides a habitable environment for them to thrive in and outcompete native species.  Keeping sources of pollution and limiting development on in this area will create a direct benefit for this ecosystem.  An interesting way to educate students at this site would be to have them take water quality measurments in the river and have them compare the data to ideal data for the watershed.
